Dally's Motivation

Dally’s motivation is to keep johnny from becoming him. “ You get hardened in jail. I don’t want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me”(80). Dally died because he loved Johnny so much. Another example is when he visits Johnny and acts like the parent he never really had. Johnny was something Dally couldn’t lose. He was like a little puppy you couldn’t afford to lose. Dally will never ever leave Johnny.

Dally has the strength of a fast mind, whatever kind of trouble or help someone needs he can help. Dally helps pony and Johnny when the cops are chasing them. “ Well, wait a sec and I’ll see what I can do about this mess” (60). Another example is when Dally was trying to get out of the hospital to get to the rumble so he had 2-bit give him his knife. With a fast mind Dally was able to get out of any situation.

Dally's Flaws

Dally's flaws are that he is put in jail to much and he wishes he could change. Two examples of this are when he says to Johnny, don’t become me cause I want you to stay sweet forever. Also when he dies he died cause he wanted to be done. ”Dally didn’t die a hero” (134). This flaw is very bad for Johnny’s sake because he looks up to Dally. Dally is a role model in the greaser world.

Dally's Character Type

Dally is a protagonist, he is static, and round. He is a protagonist because he is a greaser. He is static because he does not change throughout the book. He is round because they get more in depth when talking about Dally. An example of this is when they are talking about who the greasers are. Another example of this is when they go into Dally’s past and explain why he goes to jail and his homelife. “Dally came down the mountain doing Eighty-five” (70).

Dally's Characteristics

Dally is agreeable, and he is an extrovert. He is agreeable because he says yes to everything that makes sense in the greaser world, so to say. “ Agreeableness describes a person’s tendency to put other’s needs before their own” ( Personality test). An example of this is when Pony asks Dally for help. He is an extravert because whoever he meets he starts a conversation with them. An example of this is when he is at the movie theatre and starts talking to Cherry. He is willing to make conversation with whoever walks by unless they are a soc, he gets protective around them.
