Case 1: The Hog Farm Dilemma (Eastern NC)

For years, a large hog farm in rural eastern North Carolina has used open-air lagoons to store animal waste. After several heavy rainstorms, nearby residents noticed a strong odor and brownish water in a creek that flows into a local river. A local family reported that fish and frogs had disappeared from the small pond behind their home.
County officials tested the creek and found high levels of bacteria and nitrogen compounds. Farmers nearby also complained that their wells had started to smell bad.

What clues in the text suggest that water quality has changed?

What human activity might be responsible?

The clues in the text that suggest water quality has changed, are the disappearance of fish and frogs, high levels of bacteria and nitrogen compounds in the lake, and the bad smell from the farmer's well. The human activity that might be responsible is the storage of animal waste in open-air lagoons by the large hog farm.

Where it says is beginning to become brownish and fish are disappearing from the area are context clues. Farmers dumping pig poop in the water are the cause of it.

1. Some clues in the text that suggest that the water quality has changed are how they described the water turning brownish and a strong odor coming from the creek and how it traveled to many other lakes and creeks even Wales

2. human activity might be responsible for this because they put the pig waste in the open air lagoon instead of finding a better way to put it in store instead they were lazy and put it in the lagoon causing the creek water to turn brown and have a strong odor and causing fish and frogs to leave there home.

And this resulted to High levels of bacteria and nitrogen compound.

The clues in the text that suggest water quality has changed are the strong odor, brownish water in the creek, high levels of bacteria and nitrogen compounds, and the smell in the wells. The disappearance of fish and frogs from the pond also indicates water problems. The human activity responsible is the hog farm using open-air lagoons to store animal waste. Heavy rain may have caused the waste to overflow into the creek, polluting the water.
