From STEM to STEAM?

STEM is a comprehensive program in schools, usually K-12, that integrates science, technology, engineering, and math into the the classroom, in such a way that equips students to go into the workforce able to problem solve and resolve conflict quickly and efficiently. Although a lot of conversation has been centered around how to involve engineering in schools, people are also beginning to question if the arts should be added to the STEM program. I believe that it is a great and productive idea to add arts into the growing program, because this way students can learn about engineering through art design, which is a key aspect of this field. When the idea was first brought up, I was taken aback, because art does not seem to have a lot to do with the science and math approach STEM takes, but instead I discovered that art is really what combines and connects all of these programs together.

Pitfalls, Advice for Art Teachers, and a Call for Research

Although I believe that STEAM research could be a innovative approach to STEM, there are also many ways that this could be problematic. By adding a new subject area, a teacher could spend too much time covering one area and not enough on one of the other programs. This could potentially skew the program for the students, so the teachers should be educated and equipped in how to go about teaching their students. Personally, I believe that teachers should attend seminars or conferences that are put on by a larger organization, which would allow them to gain a professional understanding of this new development in the education world. Art instructors could play a huge role in reinventing art class by providing engaging and scientific evidence on why certain approaches can be taken.

Critical Thoughts

I picked these thoughts out when reading the article on STEM and Art Design, because they accurately depict what the article is trying to get across to its readers. First, the author must educate its audience on the new developments in education and teaching, which I summarized in From STEM to STEAM. Lastly, the author wanted the reader, potentially educators and administrators, that although adding art to the STEAM program is a great idea, that it will also provide the community with new challenges. Overall I enjoyed reading the article, because I had not heard this argument before, but I think that it could be revolutionary to what STEM already offers.
