The stimulus we chose to do in out group this week was based around politics. In particular it was about youth that aren't listened to for their opinions because they are ‘too young and ignorant.’ The idea was to write a folk themed song in protest of the government. I think that our choice of genre worked well with the stimulus we had chosen as it is still typically angry as a protest song, but the use of the folk genre makes it soft and enjoyable to listen to.

The development

Our performance used a banjo, bass guitar, acoustic guitar and two vocalists. In early development, we opened with the lyrics straight away but decided to have an intro played on the banjo instead later on. Furthermore, we added in an extra chorus in between some of the verses in order to extend the piece and develop the structure. The chords were also changed for the chorus later on so there was some differentiation.

We did attempt to develop the song further in order to have a breakdown. However we felt that we didn't have enough time to complete this, so instead our group made a mutual decision to play through the song without using a breakdown or too many buildups.

Our final performance followed the structure of opening for 4 bars on the banjo, and then bringing in the chords muted on guitar and the vocals. Another 4 bars later, the bass came in letting the root notes of the chorus ringing out. We then play the notes of the verse faster to build up into the chorus. The chorus involves playing the notes more frequently to differentiate between the verses and chorus. We then bring this down again after repeating the notes of the chorus once again in order to go back into the verses. Just before the outro, I made the mistake of playing a little longer than I was supposed to however it still worked with the song and appeared to give the song more structure and change in texture. To end the song, we drop out the vocals and guitar, and then the bass, and end on a bar played by the banjo to create the soft feel again for the song.

Before the performance, our song is described as a political folk song representing our anger towards the government’s views. I believed we followed through on this in the performance through the lyrics we used especially. Our peers thought that the style used was a good representation of our stimulus and that the lyrics accurately gave the point we were trying to get across. They also commented positively on the use of the texture when the bass came in and out of the song, and the levels of the song considering the limitations we had using an acoustic banjo. Therefore I would say the strengths of our song were the lyrics and the texture of the song through the use of dropping instruments out.

Our class said that in order to improve, the levels of the acoustic guitar and banjo could have been turned up a little. We were also told than percussion would help the song to develop. Personally, I believe the song could have been developed further in the structure, for instance adding a breakdown and more verses and having better build ups leading into the verses.

In regards to my own strengths and weaknesses, I think the levels of my bass worked well in the group. To improve I would have added more differentiation in the parts I played in the song, such as a change of the notes I played to create a breakdown, and a better use of dynamics in he song.

In conclusion, I would agree that our performance was reflective of our chosen stimulus and that it worked considerably well, thanks to the lyrics in particular. Yet, I think that there are many things that we would be able to improve on if we were to do the performance again. One of these being the structure.
