I think they were even exceeded. Before I had taken this class, I don’t think I fully understood all the different types of special learners! I knew about gifted children and some of the different learning disabilities but not in so much depth. When I first decided I wanted to be in the teaching field I had no clue of the immense amount of teaching strategies that can be applied to help so many different types of learners. At the beginning of this semester I had expected to learn new skills and strategies that are related to students with special needs like behavior disorders and learning disabilities. I now know all the challenges that will come with being a teacher and how to apply myself in a way that will lead to success for all my students. I think I have been pretty successful with the course work in this class and completed several of the projects before the due date. Each and every class brings out both unique strengths and weaknesses. I think this class has helped me grow to become a more efficient teacher. There is SO many teaching strategies I had never even thought of before that could help with any type of learner! I have increased my knowledge and skills in the education field and have even learned to make wiser decisions. Mainly I have learned to make better decisions on time management. I now realize that teaching isn’t that easy of a job and it takes both time and patience to come up with lesson plans and make sure all students are absorbing the information taught to them. This experience will be something that I always remember and will use it to help make me a more efficient teacher. I think we all have some preconceived notions about those who require special needs in the classroom but being able to actually learn in depth about these types of students will surely change your mind! At least it did for me. I have learned how to interact with these students and keep a positive mind even when things don’t go as planned. One aspect I really enjoyed was that there was not a bunch of extra fluff. The assignments were very straightforward with clear directions. I loved that there were not any papers! This being my 5^th semester here at Butler I feel like the majority of my classes consisted of lengthy papers that really didn’t teach me all that much. I also learned about a lot of new technology websites that were super fun to use, I liked being able to put a touch of our personality into the projects with images and colors and other cool effects. As for the teacher, Dr. G, I absolutely loved how much you care about your students. Each project has feedback, which I think is super important for student’s success. I absolutely loved the set-up and the use of ‘technology projects’. So many classes are repetitive with papers and discussion board postings, so this class was a breath of fresh air, so to say. I do think that if this class would have met in person, group work would have been an added little bonus. I generally don’t like group work much because you have to depend on others to pull their weight, but with this course I think it would interesting to see other opinions on what types of teaching strategies they would apply in certain situations.
