The north is extremely isolated from our urban centers and areas with large population densities. What does this mean for the citizens of the territories?

The northern territories have very spread out populations and isolated access to essential services, community relations and activities, or jobs. Communities spread far apart have created economic hopelessness. The climate greatly impacts mental health and social function too, with terrible anxiety and depression-inducing weather. On top of that 2/3 of territories have a majority aboriginal population, discriminated against by the government causing the young Inuit population to question their culture, identity and purpose. The result of these societal, demographic and environmental isolation factors; one of the highest rates of crime, domestic violence, drugs, and suicide, and one of the highest per-capita prison populations in Canada.

The northern areas have little to no technological advancement, in fact, essential services are not sufficiently present and the territories are still battling with gaining federal funding for developmental economic and technological growth, which the government is still denying.

Distance plays a major role in why the economic state of the north is so severely underdeveloped and weak. Canada's major supply routes are cut off to the north, causing the unreasonably high cost of living and food, due to the fact that importing goods, food and essential items cannot be done by land. As for building agricultural sectors in the north, the ground is frozen solid year-round in a constant state of permafrost. It is also why paving roads is so difficult and costly up north. Infrastructure in drastic environmental conditions is much more costly, complex and unnecessary, which is exactly why the economic development of the area is so weak.

Environmentally, most of Nunavut is in the Canadian Arctic, where the winters are cold and dark, the summer full of endless sunshine, and the region is doused with stunning rocky valleys, high sea cliffs, thick ice, large snowdrifts, and frozen lakes. Copper, gold, zinc and oil are also rich in the area. The rugged stunning physical beauty of the northern provinces are evident; awe-inducing northern lights and breathtaking arctic landscapes. However, even the natural beauties of the north are being pummeled by climate change at alarming rates.

Politically, the Government of Canada inadequately supplies the north with proper resources and funding, inducing a frozen economic state, weak societal structure, discriminatory behaviour towards the aboriginal population and a technological stump.
