The moon has two areas, the light side called highlands and the dark side called marias.

*Marias: dark and flat surfaces found on the moon

*Scientists believe that marias were created by lava flooding into basins.

*The marias are a latin term for the word "seas."

*They were given this name by older astronomers that believed the moon had large oceans, while they were just lava filled basins.

*Craters: indented markings on the moon from meteoroids that had crashed into the moon

*Most craters are circular and have a diameter of at least 15 kilometers.

*The maria does not have many craters.

*Highlands: highlands are the moons mountains

- Eclipses occur when an object in space comes between the Sun and the third object.

- Solar Eclipses occur when the moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, blocking the sunlight from Earth.

- The umbra is the darkest part of the moon's shadow that blocks the light from the Sun Completely

- During a Lunar Eclipse, Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.

-When the entire moon is in Earth's umbra, you see a total solar eclipse. However, there is 1 total eclipse ever 1 to 2 years.

The tides are caused maily by differences in how much the moons gravity pulls on different parts of earth.

-The tide cycle: As the earth rotates, one high tide stays on the side of earth facing the moon. The second tide stays on the opposite side of earth.

-Their combined forces produce a tide called spring tide between consecutive low and high tides.

-The tide with the least difference between consecutive tides and high tides is called neap tide.

-
