The quote in paragraph 48 contributes to the authors explanation of the justice system telling us. That we all should have equal rights and equal justice no matter what we look like or what we believe in. In the second paragraph it states "But in between the important cases, I found myself spending most of my time prosecuting people of color for things we white kids did with impunity". Later on he says "Though I was the one clearly breaking a law, they went after him." The first quote says that the Constantino the district attorney is prosecuting people of color more heavily then white people, even if they did the same crime. This impacts that the author is realizing this failed justice system that no-one thinks is bad even if it means innocent people, going to jail. This next quote further confirms Constantino's theory that the justice system wasn't fair and innocent people of color are more likely being accused of a crime then white people. He even proves by doing something illegal but since he was white and dressed professional, no one stopped him. The police talk to him but lets the speaker off the hook but then chases after an innocent colored man, doing no wrong. In summary Thomas Jefferson's quote is saying that everyone should be equal no matter what they look like or what they believe in.

The quote in paragraph 48 contributes to the author's explanation of the justice system by addressing the matter that if you are a person of color or not, you shouldn't be judged for who you are. The author states that, " I stood quietly, wondering whether they would arrest me or write a summons. The officers grumbled a few choice curse words and then ran down the stairs in pursuit of the young man. Though I was the one clearly breaking a law, they went after him." This can support the evidence that the justice system is biased and that they think people of color are the cause of most violence. The justice system was created not to be biased, but some of the choices played a part in it becoming one of the most feared things today.

The quote by Thomas Jefferson in paragraph 48 contributes to the authors explanation of the justice system because the author believes that everyone should have equal and exact justice. In one of the paragraphs he is carrying around the paint next to the police and the black guy yelled at him and the police went after him. This shows that they aren't treating everyone equally and that they didn't stop him because of his skin color. In conclusion he should have gotten equal punishment even if he was white and that everyone should be treated the same.

The quote by Thomas Jefferson in paragraph 48 contributes to the author's explanation of the justice system since it shows how corrupt the justice system is since the justice system doesn't reflect this quote. An example of this is, "Over the next 24 hours, I watched as men and women came and went, many with cuts, bruises, and welts. I asked several of them how they’d been injured, and they described fierce struggles with the police." This proves that there was not equal justice of everyone because other people were purposefully hurt by the police while others were not. Another example is, "The judge — in an unusual move that showed how much the case bothered him — went over the prosecutor's head and ordered three years of probation, a $1000 fine, a $250 surcharge, a $50 surcharge, 30 days of community service, and a special condition allowing police and probation officers to enter and search my residence anytime without a warrant." This proves that there was no justice for the author since he got a ridiculous punishment for a minor crime. The quote by Thomas Jefferson that was supposed to represent the justice system did not because not everyone was treated equally.

The quote by Thomas Jefferson in paragraph 48 contributes to the authors explanation of justice system by stating that all men are equal and deserve equal justice. For instance this is shown In paragraphs 19-22 it says " I watched as men and women came and went, many with cuts, bruises, and welts. I asked several of them how they’d been injured, and they described fierce struggles with the police. One young man cradled what he reported was a broken wrist. Another pulled up his shirt and revealed three Taser burns. Yet another removed his fitted cap and pointed to a swollen knot on his head. I exchanged uncomfortable glances with the few other white men in the cellblock. “Did they treat you like that?” I whispered.“No, you?“No.” We held out our wrists to compare." Here the author is explains his experience in jail and how men of color were treated poorly and he and the other white man weren't. By adding the quote from Thomas Jefferson it summarized the whole passage that all men should be treated equally no matter race, ethnicity etc.

The prosecutor asked for 15 days of community service as punishment. My attorney requested time served. The judge — in an unusual move that showed how much the case bothered him — went over the prosecutor's head and ordered three years of probation, a $1000 fine, a $250 surcharge, a $50 surcharge, 30 days of community service, and a special condition allowing police and probation officers to enter and search my residence anytime without a warrant. In paragraph 47, the author states, "I tell my story because this is the side of the system we didn’t get to see where I grew up." This quote shows that the author, a white man, didn't experience injustice in his lifetime until he was incarcerated. He himself admits to wanting to "incarcerate everything insight" fresh out of law school, until he was arrested and experienced the true unfairness of the justice system. Overall, the author and Thomas Jefferson both agree on equal rights for all people.

In this short story, the quote by Thomas Jefferson in paragraph 48 states that "Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion.” this contributes to the authors explanation of the justice system because the quote states what should happen in the justice system but in reality what he experienced was the opposite. While the author was trying to get arrested a young black man yelled at him and some officers approached him. "What are you, some kind of a******?” he asked. I stood quietly, wondering whether they would arrest me or write a summons. The officers grumbled a few choice curse words and then ran down the stairs in pursuit of the young man. Though I was the one clearly breaking a law, they went after him. " While the author was clearly the one in the wrong they went after the man who was not breaking any of the laws presumably because of his skin color which goes against Jefferson's quote. He also said "But in between the important cases, I found myself spending most of my time prosecuting people of color for things we white kids did with impunity". This shows that while both people of color and white kids were doing the same thing but only the people of color got prosecuted which once again goes against the quote. In conclusion the quote helps contribute to his explanation because it tells us what the justice system should be like but the author shows us what it is actually like.

The quote from Thomas Jefferson in paragraph 48 contributes to the author's explanation of the justice system by expressing how hypocritical the system is, acting like it will bring equality and justice to all people when really that's not the case. The author says "I found myself spending most of my time prosecuting people of color for things white kids did with impunity." The Jefferson quote says that equal justice should be provided to all men, but clearly there's some racial discrimination and the system isn't completely equal. The author also describes prisoners in his cell that were beaten and injured by the officers, yet he says "I exchanged uncomfortable glances with the few other white men in the cell block. "Did they treat you like that?" I whispered. "No, you?" "No."" This is more evidence that the justice system is not completely just, contradictory to what the Jefferson quote says. The quote from Thomas Jefferson adds to the author's idea that the justice system is hypocritical and not truly equitable to all.

In paragraph 19, it states, "I watched as men and women came and went, many with cuts, bruises, and welts." This indicates the different experiences each person had in the hands of the justice system or the police. Also in paragraph 26-30, “CO, I’m diabetic, I need my sugar... sir, can’t you see I’m busy here?” This quote shows us that when a man was denied his medication, the justice system has failed to treat the people with humanity. Throughout the text, the author gave us many examples that prove the justice system has treated people differently, unfairly, and harshly.

The quote by Thomas Jefferson in paragraph 48 contributes to his explanation of the justice system by contrasting what the quote said and how the justice system runs. This is proven in the text when there is an interaction between the white people in the cell block about how they were treated better then the colored people, "uncomfortable glances with the few other white men in the cellblock.

[20]

“Did they treat you like that?” I whispered.

“No, you?”

“No.” We held out our wrists to compare."

As you can see in the quote above they directly talk about how the white people in the cell block were treated much better then the colored people, this directly contradicts what Thomas Jefferson said about equal and exact justice for all men. Over all the quote helps you to understand that the US justice system isn't as equal and fair as it should be, this lines up with how the author feels ,at the end of his journey, about the US justice system.

The quote by Thomas Jefferson in paragraph 48 contributes to the authors explanation of the justice system by showing how the justice system is corrupt and how it treats people differently. Paragraph 10 says, "The officers grumbled a few choice curse words and then ran down the stairs in pursuit of the young man. Though I was the one clearly breaking a law, they went after him." This shows how the police officers went after someone completely innocent knowing that a white man broke the law. Paragraph 19 says, "I asked several of them how they’d been injured, and they described fierce struggles with the police." This shows that depending on your skin color decides how you will be treated by the police. In summary the justice system failed to show that everyone will be treated the same.
