The people were not happy with the military running the government and how they were being treated. Government forces (military) were known to employ sexual violence and torture against the civilian population. In the bloodiest three-year period of the civil war, 1981–83, scholars have calculated 100,000 deaths within the Mayan population alone. The military stripped the people's rights away and their dignity resulting in the people creating groups and trying to overthrow the government.

The war officially ended with the signing of the peace accords on December 29, 1996, brokered by the United Nations. The URNG was demobilized, and its fighters were reintegrated into society. However, the government forces were seen as the dominant side throughout most of the conflict, and the peace agreement allowed the government to retain its position of power.
