He even said "I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk," P.g. 432. The narrator's pride and his constant pushing did, of course, have a hand in it, but there are many other reasons why Doodle died that do not involve the narrator at all. Doodle was expected to die from a very young age, so clearly his body was frail and fragile. It was impossible for the narrator to know exactly how much was too much. Doodle was given the name William Armstrong as a kid the name sounds good only on a tombstone. Brother was excited to get someone to play with when he found out that he would get a sibling, but his thoughts changed when he saw Doodle. He even tried to suffocate him with a pillow. In the story, it states that he wanted Doodle to learn to walk- so he constantly pushed him harder each day so that he could learn. It wasn't until at Doodle's birthday that we learn, (from Brother's thoughts), that he only did so because he was embarrassed of having a disabled brother. Brother was selfish enough to do this for himself, but in the end, it affected more than just him. He seemed to have sweet moments with Doodle, like when they were planning to live together, or when Brother first showed Doodle "Old Woman Swamp". Moments like those that made you think that they would have a strong bond as they got older. But then, when they were out alone and it started storming, Brother left Doodle to fend for himself after he had fallen; not knowing that when he would return, Doodle would be dead. Another reason I think he is innocent is because at the end of the story he was crying over the fact that his little brother had just dies.
