Video #1: What is Leukemia?

This video focuses on the topic of what cancer is in the cell level, and how cells cause cancer and act during cancer treatment. It tells how bone marrow builds white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. However, sometimes cancer cells are made when the cell does not grow correctly, and leukemia is when white bloods cells do not grow properly and can no longer carry out their duties. Leukemia is a vicious disease because the cells can multiply and divide without knowing when to die off. Finally, the video makes a point about chemotherapy, which destroys the cancer cells, but can also destroy some healthy cells along the way. Overall, this video gives a great base understanding of what leukemia is.

This video goes in depth about how chemotherapy, the most common treatment for leukemia, works. First, it talks about the history of chemo and how it came about by dangerous gases used in WW1. Then, it clearly explains how the treatment has rapid effects on the most rapidly dividing cells, which are the cancer cells, but it also affects other cells too. Next, the video goes on to explain what is happening on the cellular level when the treatment hits the cells. Last, the video explains the side effects of chemo, and what can happen since many of the other cells in the body are being killed off along with the cancer cells, including hair loss, fertility problems, effects on the intestines, and more. In conclusion, this video gave me a clear understanding about how the treatment for leukemia works and the risks and benefits of it.

I chose this topic because I have read multiple books and watched multiple movies where a child has leukemia, and I have always found it very interesting and heartbreaking. I also just recently found out that one of the first graders I am teaching CCD to used to have cancer. This breaks my heart, and brings to light that this disease is very real, so I wanted to learn more about it through this project.
Throughout this project, I learned that leukemia is a type of cancer most common in children. It is caused by bone marrow creating unfinished cells, cancer cells, that spread rapidly and affect the entire body. This is usually treated with chemotherapy, which attacks not only the cancer cells but also other cells in the body, causing many side effects, most commonly and noticeably hair loss.
Having leukemia or having a child or sibling with leukemia can be very time consuming, hard, and heart breaking. The process is long, and always has a chance to return. The best thing to do during this time is stay positive and radiate love and support.

Throughout the video, there are many different scientist, doctors, and experts explaining what ALL is and how it is treated. First, the video explains some symptoms of ALL and gives a couple of examples of parents who knew something was wrong when their child first got it. Then, it goes to explain how chemo is the necessary procedure for this disease, and how it can weaken other parts of the body. Next, it explains how parents and siblings might feel when their family member has leukemia and how hard it would be. Also, it mentions how there are many helpers in the hospital who spend time with the children and remind them they are strong. Throughout the video, it shows many children in the hospital doing procedures and talking, giving a good vision of what being a child with leukemia might look like. Overall, this video was not only packed with useful information, but it also gives a good visual by showing clips of hospitals and children with leukemia.
