Apartheid started out when a group of white men came to power under the National Party. They immediately began to enforce segregation among the people ( until 1990's.). 1913 Land Act - helped segregate africans in to reserves and outlawed the africans from sharecropping. Worldwide events also assisted in South Africa's racial divide such as the Great Depression and WW2. After the Afrikaner party won the election they divided the africans among tribal lines to decrease their political power.

As well as The Registration Act of 1950 divided the africans into 4 categories: Asian, Bantu, Colored, and White. This split families in some cases. Then a series of Land acts were passed that gave 4/5ths of the land to the white minority as well as forcing the black majority to carry passes to go into different regions.
