In 1912, people travelled to America by ship. When the Titanic was built, it was the largest passenger ship in the world. It was built to sail between Southampton in England and New York City in the United States.

Sadly, the Titanic hit an iceberg near Canada on the night of 14 April while on her maiden voyage. The iceberg ripped a big hole in the side of the ship. Four hours later, the ship sank, and 1,517 people died. There were only 20 lifeboats – that was nowhere near enough for all the people aboard.

Construction
The Titanic was built in Belfast in Ireland and owned by the White Star Line. The White Star Line was a shipping company in Liverpool, and they had hired the best engineers and designers of that time to build a ship full of modern comforts and technology. In fact, it was said that the ship was unsinkable! The architect who designed the ship was named Thomas Andrews. He was one of those who died when the ship sank.

Size
The name Titanic comes from Greek mythology, and it means gigantic. And it was! When the Titanic was built, it was the biggest passenger ship in the world. The ship was 269 metres long and had six decks. It could sail at a speed of 21 knots (39 km/h).

Facilities
The Titanic was all about luxury. The goal was to make the ship look like a floating hotel instead of a ship.
You could travel first, second or third class. On first class, the cabinswere very luxurious. There were many restaurants on board, and there was even a library, a gym, a squash court and a swimming pool.

Passengers
There were 2,224 passengers aboard the Titanic. Many of the passengers were emigrants. They were leaving Great Britain, Ireland and different European countries to start a new life in the USA. But the ship also carried some of the richest people in the world. One of them was John Jacob Astor IV. He was one of the wealthiest people in the world at the time.

Crew
There were 885 crew members on the ship. They were engineers, firemen and mechanics, who looked after the engine of the ship; stewards and stewardesses, who helped the passengers; and butchers, bakers, chefs, fishmongers, dishwashers, laundrymen, waiters and cleaners. Most of them were men and came from Southhampton. Of course, there was also a captain – his name was Edward John Smith.
