One advantage of using songs in the young learner classroom is their flexibility.
Songs can help young learners improve their listening skills and pronunciation, therefore potentially helping them to improve their speaking skills (Murphey, 1992). Songs can also be useful tools in the learning of vocabulary, sentence structures, and sentence patterns, not to mention their reflectivity of mother tongue culture (Murphey, 1992). Perhaps the greatest benefit to using songs in the classroom is that they can be fun.

(Neil T.

After reading the text “Using Songs Effectively to Teach English to Young Learners” written by Neil T. Millington, I can say that there are a lot of benefits of using songs and chants in the early years teaching. Some of them are the followings:

Ø “Songs can be taught to any number of students and even those teachers with the most limited resources can use them effectively” (p.134)

Ø “Songs can help young learners improve their listening skills and pronunciation, therefore helping them to improve their speaking skills (Murphey, 1992)” (p.134).

Ø “Songs provide students with practice listening to different forms of intonation and rhythm. English has a stress-timed rhythm, for which songs can help to establish a feeling” (p. 135)

Ø “Songs can also be useful tools in the learning of vocabulary, sentence structures, and sentence patterns (Murphey, 1992)” (p. 134).

Ø “Young learners can be given the opportunity to learn about seasonal or historical events in the target language through songs” (p. 136).

Ø “Songs can bring variety to the everyday classroom routine” and help maintain classroom motivation. They can also “help to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere that makes the classroom a nonthreatening environment” (p. 136).

Corral Johana.

Taking into account the text “Using Songs Effectively to Teach English to Young Learners” written by Neil T. Millington, one of the challenges that teachers can face using songs and chants is that finding and selecting songs that are suitable both in terms of vocabulary and topic or theme could be difficult.

Another one can be that teachers need “to take care when selecting a song because some songs have irregular sentence structures that are not typically used in English conversation” (p. 136)

In addition, “to maintain variety in the classroom, the teacher needs a good repertoire of songs” (p. 137)
Corral Johana.

Source: "Using Songs Effectively to Teach English to Young Learners1", Neil T. Millington (2011)

Using songs and chants can benefit learners’ development in many ways:

· It can help them improve their listening skills and pronunciation, as they present different forms of intonation and rhythm, similar to the stress patterns of spoken English.

· It can be useful in the teaching of vocabulary and sentence structures because they provide a context for learning vocabulary.

· It can also give learners the opportunity to reflect on mother tongue culture.

· It can motivate children since they enjoy singing and it can bring something different to the routine.

· It can reduce anxiety by creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere, increasing, that way, children interest and motivation.

· It can help reinforce structures taught in classroom because most kid’s songs have simple sentence structures or sentence patters that can become set in the mind of the learners.
