The irony here is that while Alan comes in for a love potion, the old man knows that he will ultimately need the "glove cleaner" later in life. "Au revoir" is French for "goodbye until we meet again" - the old man knows that Alan is young and naive in his love...he will win the love of Diana, but he will ironically be back later to rid himself of her love.

Collier describes the setting with adjectives such as tiny, plain, ordinary and dirty. It helps create a picture in the reader's mind of what the room Alan was walking into looked like. It also helps the reader feel the suspense and confusion that Alan felt as he walked into the room. Collier also decide to include a description of the bottles and jars, foreshadowing their important roles later in the story. (This was great, Jewell! I just shortened your quote so another member of your group could discuss the description. - Mrs. Wilcox)

"Alan Austen, as nervous as a kitten, went up certain dark and creaky stairs in the neighborhood of Pell Street, and peered about for a long time on the dime landing before he found the name he wanted written obscurely on one of the doors." (Collier 1)

Alan has been in "love" with Diana for so long, he will do anything to get her to reciprocate those feelings back. He is so desperate in fact, that he finds an old man in a suspicious location, with magical potions. Potions, including ones that make others fall in love, desperately, totally dependently, stupidly and irrationally in love. When he enters into the old man's building, he isn't sure what he wants, but at the end of our story, he is hooked. The old man knows how to sell his potions, and he describes it so well that Alan is confident he is making the right choice. The story reveals what we once thought was an innocent boy in love, is actually is silly selfish man who is blinded by love so much, he is willing to use potions.

Collier uses imagery in this part of the story to show that if Alan cheats on Diana, she will not care and will still love him. He also uses it while saying, "there are always sirens". "Sirens" are dangerous creatures from Greek mythology that would lure seamen with their voices to come to the conclusion of killing them. But, the old man is using this word to describe that if Alan gets lured in to another woman and cheats on Diana, Diana will forgive him for cheating on her if Alan gave Diana the love potion.

A siren is a Greek mythology term for a dangerous creature or women who's singing/beauty lured unwary soldiers onto rocks. It's a never ending cycle, people come, buy the cheap love potion, realize what they've done, come back to the old man's shop, and get the expensive "glove-cleaner" potion. The old man knows this will happen to Alan as well, due to his previous experiences.

In this moment we realize that Alan is so in love and desperate for Diana that his judgement is severely cloudy. All he can think about is how his life will be changed for the better with her in it. He has always thought and witnessed Diana as a strong willed, brave, independent young woman, so when the Old Man explains how the potion will work, he is completely focused on dooming Diana with false feelings . Did he take a moment to imagine how Diana's life and ability to experience genuine love would be changed forever with his decision? All he is feeling is joy and happiness and it didn't register with him that Diana was a person, and not just something he could fondle with and poison his way into her heart and natural state of being. When Alan is startled with the Old Man's description of the potion and thinks it will poison her ( "Do you mean a poison?" cried Alan, very much horrified.) I believe he is being a hypocrite. He may not be poisoning her and killing her in the way he imagines a poison would do, but he is mentally intoxicating Diana' s brain into loving him. Love has swindled Alan into being a selfish, one track mind man. His judgement is cloudy and his want and need for Diana pushes him to make the decision to poison her without hesitation.

I find it odd how our world and society works. The young man wanted Diana to love him as much as he loves her. And when Alan told that to the old man after the old man had talked all about another potion which was 5,000 instead of just 1$ like the love potion the old man sort of was like disappointing when he switched to talking about the love potion. He talks about how great it is and then his attitude completely shifts and he pulls out a dirty phial that is 1 dollar. I find it strange to think about and realize this. In the real world here is and example. We have a thing called the dollar store. Everything's a dollar there, but theirs a catch. Everything is also cheaply made. So lets say you buy a basket. A cheap thin basket from the dollar store, but it breaks. So you buy a replacement one. A week later it breaks. Now your off to buy another one and you've already spent 3$ and if you keep buying them you not gonna stop because there just gonna keep breaking. Only because u bought that first one and it was cheaply made. But in a higher priced sore with better quality you could have just bought one for maybe 5$ and have it lasted. In this short story the man buys that one potion but the old man knows when he sells that love potion that Alan will be back to get the other potion. Sad to think about to me honestly. -Kaylee Vollriede

Collier creates the tone of suspense when he said, "went up certain dark and creaky stairs in the neighborhood of Pell Street." (Collier 1). The author's use of the suspenseful tone to the neighborhood, helps create the setting and the suspicious vibe to the old man later in the story.
"She will actually be jealous?" cried Alan in a rapture. "Of me?" "Yes, she will want to be everything to you." "She is, already. Only she doesn't care about it." "She will, when she has taken this. She will care intensely. You will be her sole interest in life." "Wonderful!" cried Alan".

The tone that Collier used in this quote is excitement. As the old man was telling Alan all the affects of the love potion, Alan began to feel rapture which means, an feeling of pleasure or joy.The author uses the tone of excitement to help create the tone of Alan.
"Call it a glove-cleaner if you like," said the old man indifferently. "Maybe it will clean gloves. I have never tried. One might call it a life-cleaner. Lives need cleaning sometimes." "I want nothing of that sort," said Alan." (Collier 1)

The tone Collier creates in this quote is uneasy. the old man seems unconcerned with what the glove/life-cleaner really does. While Alan seems afraid of the life-cleaner. The author creates an uneasy tone showing the different perspectives of the mysterious life-cleaner. The indifference the old man feels compared to Alan's fear shows the uneasiness in the quote.

Jonah Mueller "Thank you again" said Alan. "Goodbye" "Au revoir," said the man
The tone that the auther creates in this quote is mysterious. It is mysterious because au revoir means goodbye, until we meet again. which shows that he knows that the love potion will cause them to meet again.

Will sampson "sit down, mr austin" said the old man very politely. "i am glad to make your acquaintance."
the tone the writer makes here is very ominous, as though the old man has very powerful connections, or unknown brilliance or powers. without alan speaking a word, the old man knows his name. that shows that the old man is very powerful in ways the author never specifies.

The tone that the writer makes is very mysterious and lost. The old man doesn't even know what some of his own mixtures do, which makes the readers point of view almost like Alan's because at that point, the reader knows almost as much as Alan does making it hard to understand.
"You will not have to use your imagination," said the old man. "And, by the way, since there are always sirens, if by any chance you should, later on, slip a little, you need not worry. In this quote Collier is showing the reader how devoted Alan is to Diana, because he has no intention of seeing anyone else. This shows that even though he s being selfish with this whole love potion thing. He does love only Diana. Collier's Tone is that of loyalty. The kind of loyalty that can blind you into doing dumb things, and being manipulated.

The narrator puts the old man in the position of a wise, all-knowing being, and suggests that the idea that the story is trying to convey to the reader has to do with what he is teaching to his customers. By doing this, the author creates a tone that suggests that this story is only representative of something on a larger scale.

"He pushed open this door, as he had been told to do, and found himself in a tiny room, which contained no furniture but a plain kitchen table, a rocking-chair, and an ordinary chair" (Collier 1).
- Mrs. Wilcox)

The author wanted to make sure that the reader understood the dirtiness of this flat. The thing that stood out to me was that in the quote
before it described the smallness of the room but in this particular quote it says there were shelves on the walls with an assortment of different jars and bottles that contain other potions so this just gives me the feeling that there isn't much room in the flat even though we later learn that these couple of potions are both expensive and necessary so you would think he would have enough money to buy a better place but he knows that the people coming there are coming there to get something not to stay and be comfortable

"and peered about for a long time on the dime landing before he found the name he wanted written obscurely on one of the doors" (Collier 1
What Collier is trying to do is give the reader an idea of what this place is going to be like. He's telling us how the place so far is dark and creepy and quite mysterious, kind of like the potion. This may also be seen as foreshadowing, but he is still trying to tell us that this place is kind of sketchy. However he says the name was written "obscurely" on the door, meaning that it was hard to find unless you were looking for it specifically...which can also be kinda sketchy.

“Alan Austen, as nervous as a kitten, went up certain dark and creaky stairs in the neighborhood of Pell Street’’
The author made sure to state that it was dark and that the stairs were creaking to show the audience that the building isn't being used everyday or is abandoned. It helps the readers understand why Alan is nervous to go into the building after he described it. The author tells the reader that the old man’s apartment is on Pell Street.

'"You will not have to use your imagination," said the old man. "And, by the way, since there are always sirens, if by any chance you should, later on, slip a little, you need not worry. She will forgive you, in the end. She will be terribly hurt, of course, but she will forgive you-in the end."'

Collier connects this allusion to the greek mythology of sirens, which is a flowery island surrounded by rocks. It helps by telling you that there's gonna be other beautiful women that Alan is gonna wanna cheat on Diana for, but Diana will always forgive him.

¨I can hardly imagine Diana like that! cried Alan, overwhelmed with joy.¨ (Collier 3)
Collier applies allusion in the text by referencing Diana to explain Alan´s emotion. This helps the reader understand how joyful Alan is, over the fact that Diana will finally fall in love with him.
Abby Ploch "How carefully she will look after you! She will never allow you to be tired, to sit in a draught, to neglect your food. If you are an hour late, she will be terrified. She will think you are killed, or that some siren has caught you." (Collier 4)

Collier creates this into an allusion by mentioning a siren. A siren is a Greek mythology term for a dangerous creature or women who's singing/beauty lured unwary soldiers onto rocks. It helps us to understand why Diana would get worried if Alan was an hour late and how she would be worried about other women. But it also shows us how crazy she could get.

Irony
"I like to oblige," said the old man. "Then customers come back, later in life, when they are better off, and want more expensive things. Here you are. You will find it very effective."..."Au revoir," said the man (Collier 3).

"I like to oblige," said the old man. "Then customers come back, later in life, when they are better off, and want more expensive things. Here you are. You will find it very effective."..."Au revoir," said the man (Collier 3).

"I like to oblige," said the old man. "Then customers come back, later in life, when they are better off, and want more expensive things. Here you are. You will find it very effective." "Thank you again," said Alan. "Good-bye" "Au revoir," said the man." (Collier 1)Collier develops the old man through his dialogue, by his communication with another character. He foreshadows that Alan will be back as other customers have before. He seems calm knowing that this potion will ruin this mans life and knowing he will be tricked later into buying something to get rid of the woman he loves.
