Medicare and Medicaid never intended to pay the heavy share of LTC.

-Medicaid finances more than half of all long-term care for people who need help with daily activities, but it’s available only to people who have spent down their own assets, and it has coverage gaps.

-Sadly to say, financing from both of these entities has been declining.

-At the same time, states have been shifting Medicaid-funded care into people’s homes since 2013, even as it continues to underfund in both settings. This is happening in response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision in Olmstead v. L.C. -Once the pandemic hit, it devastated nursing homes, accounting for 35% of the country's Covid-19 deaths. 

-More than 153,000 residents and employees of 7,700 nursing homes in the U.S. have contracted the virus because they have been ill equipped to stop the spread of it.

-As a result of the lack of funding and continued development of nursing homes before the pandemic, many of them had no way of properly responding to a national emergency of this magnitude.

 -It is expected for nursing homes to struggle in the coming times, and many will be forced to close or file for bankruptcy which would displace hundreds of thousands of residents. 

-Nursing homes will need to be saved, with advocates estimating it would require up to $15 billion in federal funds to do so.
