When the author was explaining Chankara's story, Chankara was shown as a girl who was abused, and they told how her life story went. The author never explained how Chankara felt and from the text, I concluded that Chankara was very hopeful for a different future. This characterization was indirect (grimes 13).

She was bullied for her weight and how she looked, and she is scared to be who she wants to be. The text states, "I know there is a part of her that's as scared to look in the mirror as I am (grimes 71). This characterization was direct.

In Tyrone's poem, he says, "say no to race hate, don't underestimate the power of love "(Grimes 11). This speaks to me because as I grow older I realize how much people have hatred for others, and how others are treated. I think that this quote really relates to current world problems.

From reading Chankara's chapter of the story, her poem is definitely one of the deepest. During her poem she states, "I bruise easily is one of the lies she sprinkled like sugar" (Grimes 15). This speaks to me because day to day we hear about a new abuse case, either some young girl was sexually abused or a woman was treated terribly by her boyfriend, but half of the time the stories go un-reported and they continue to get mistreated.

Raul Ramirez connected with me lots even though I have never felt the same as he has. His poem made me understand his pain and made me feel like it was true pain. The quote, "I'd wait uncomfortably between the lines of my own story" (Grimes 22) shows that he was afraid to be who he wanted to be, and it shows the struggle that a lot of kids face on a day to day basis. As a teenager I feel like this is something bigger to me because I am at the age where I see it happen all the time. Kids are obviously ashamed of themselves or are bullied by other kids for being who they want to be.
