He had come to the House of Usher for his friend that was in need of help. The narrator was reluctant to stay because of how creepy the house was. But he had decided to stay for a little bit for his friend. This theme has been: Tries to reproduce the mysterious atmosphere suggested by medieval castles. The narrator is describing the house as he sees it. It makes him feel eerie and unsettling because of how the house looks. He looks at the house and sees the surroundings around it. How the trees are dead and old, how the house is worn down and on the brink of crumbling, and how everything feels depressing because it's all dark and old. The Narrator of this story describes the house as being "peculiar" meaning he has an uncertain vibe when arriving. His imagination led him to believe that the mansion would have been normal mansion, however that is not the case.
