GOVERNMENT: Sub-Saharan Africa wanted to have councils instead of a head "chief". One problem was Kongo took on the larger state form but soon suffered from Atlantic slave trade, which broke down the large states.
SOCIAL: For social class in Africa, it often was the wealthy and authority were held by families. Anyone who had lost their family or other situations such as, enslaved people who were purchased could be adopted.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURE: What I found that was unique was that members who had lost family can be "adopted" into another family, I felt like this may have helped tie their cities together.

Ottoman Empire

Balkans: This is the first place the Ottoman empire was before it stretched across to central Asia.
GOVERNMENT: The ottoman empire had a a powerful chain of warrior-sultans, they lead military groups and were soon over thrown. later on Provincial officials gained more political structure because authority was still important.
SOCIAL: bureaucrats, religious scholars, military officials had the greatest social power. On a brighter side people could move across groups or gain more social power. Women were dependent on men for social position and money, but religion limited women's power.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURE: I thought that it was cool/unique that in the ottoman empire it was common for the enslaved people to gain social power and possibly pass the sultans.

GOVERNMENT: Wealth was insured by a good efficient government. Hindu rajas and Muslim sultans could be officers of the state, when the emperor gave them grants. there was commercial activity in trade and production, and this created wealth. By the 17th century they were one of the world's most populous and affluent empires in world history.
SOCIAL: The Mughals were a Muslim dynasty that ruled over the majority of the Hindu population. Because of all the religions in the region they helped social stability for healthy business, investment and trade. Nobles were not inherited and could be taken away by the emperor.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURE: What I found that was unique was that majority of the time there was no peace in the empire there was just a lot of combat, drought, plague, and famine all during wars.

GOVERNMENT: Their government mainly consisted of chiefs or kings and in several states there were many in each. Each state or (iwi) had it's own power but at the same time the states still all worked together, and between the Maori states there was still conflict.
SOCIAL: In these islands and states there was gender differences, but women still had a little more equality than in other countries. Polynesian women could be independent, Women with families that held royal or chiefly positions and inherited authority. Gender roles were mainly based on the relationship between men and women.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURE: Something that was unique was that even though this empire existed there was nothing written about them in history books till 1999.

GOVERNMENT: The Shoguns kept a very tight hold on power in this empire with planned systems. Their governments political structure was also stronger then ever, and power was passed down dynastically from father to son. This government was also lead my a military ruler.
SOCIAL: From top to bottom the social classes started with: Warrior, farmer, artisan, and then merchant. In this case every class had it's own function and contributed in a social order. But warriors never mixed with any other class. Women the older they got and the more children they had the more power in a household.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURE: What I though was interesting was how yet they could have an elite military but also held peace and stability.

GOVERNMENT: The Indigenous Americans and escaped slaves went to the outside of the empires and governed outside of the colonial control. The European governments controlled access to consumers in the colonies, they restricted trade with other European powers and limited production.
SOCIAL: The social Hierarchies were based off of skin color, or people with mixed ancestry who claimed of higher status. The white women were responsible for the maintaining of class, race, and the societies in the plantations.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURE: What I thought was interesting was how these empires consisted of a mix of peoples, cultures, and faiths. And how later on this changed the nature for the 18th century.
