The oldest swing bridge still in operation is the Belize City Swing Bridge. The original wooden bridge was in operation from 1859 and it connected the north side of the City with the south side over the Belize River. The bridge was replaced rebuilt as a swing bridge in 1922. It was built to allow the passage of fishermen from the main harbor. It was manually turned by men to allow the river traffic to pass twice a day. It went under major repairs in 1998.

The Mechanism of a Swing Bridge

A swing bridge has a primary structural support called a vertical locating pin and a support ring. These are located usually at or near it's centre of gravity. This allows the bridge to rotate horizontally approximately 90degrees.
Swing bridges use hydraulic power to move. Electrically driven pumps feed the hydraulic accumulator which is a pressure storage reservoir, it works when pressure is applied by an external source which could be a spring, a raised weight or compressed gas. The hydraulic accumulator is sunk into the ground below the bridge and then water is released under pressure which runs the machinery to turn the bridge.
