The creation of extra greenhouse gasses can make precipitation acidic, making the watershed that it precipitates into more acidic. Foreign chemicals that enter a body of water raise or lower the pH as well. Shampoo can lower the pH value, while Industrial chemical dumping can cause the pH to raise or lower extremely. Coal mining creates sulfuric acid, which raises the pH of the local groundwater.

pH in water does not pose an issue for humans, as acid rain has a pH of 4, compared to orange juice (pH of 3). However pH poses as a serious issue for certain organisms. A common issue are "dead lakes," where because of the acidity, not many organisms live in the lake. A normal lake has a pH of 6.5, but an acidic lake has a pH of 4.2-4.4. This does not allow for the survival of snails, clams, bass, crayfish, trout, salamanders, or perches. These lakes are known as dead lakes
