This social organization is relevant today because domestic violence still occurs. According to an article written on the Yellow Brick House blog, in Canada, on average a women is murdered every 6 days by her partner. This single statistic goes to show that domestic violence is very real and a hard issue to reach out about and escape from for many reasons ("Why doesn't she just leave," 2016).

I would personally support this organization and the larger social movement it is a part of because I feel that it is very relevant in today’s world and could be a reality for anyone close to me. I’ve known of men in my distant family unfortunately treating their wives wrong and I can’t imagine what life would be like if me, my mother, sister or anyone close to me were treated badly. For that reason, I wholeheartedly would support this organization.

Domestic Violence and Feminism

This organization is part of the social movement against domestic violence however has huge emphasis on feminism. This organization specifically focuses on abused women and children, and aims to protect women from toxic relationships. There have been three different waves of feminism, in which each wave put emphasis on different social problems. Though the feminist movement as a whole aims to empower women and allow for equal representation, the second wave of feminism had more focus towards domestic abuse. The first wave of feminism was more focused on female representation legally, such as the right to vote; after WWII the second wave of feminism started to emerge which focused on a number of problems like domesticity, sexuality and addressed things such as violence against women. This wave would help women through their economic, personal and political life. For example, many feminist groups formed during this wave to help add to the feminism movement. The National Organization for Women (NOW) was formed in the 1960’s and attempted to write a Bill of Rights for women. Additionally, NOW continued to fight for women's rights and laws against sexual harassment and women’s violence (Burkett, 1998).

Is Yellow Brick House effective in achieving the objectives of the feminism?

From what I’ve seen on the organization’s website, I would say that the Yellow Brick House is very effective in serving the purpose of a social organization. When entering the website, there are statistics posted on the bottom of the page. For example, last year the organization was able to answer 2596 crisis calls, serve 5581 children and women and put in 10034 volunteer hours to make it possible (“Our Yellow Brick House”). These are just a few statistics that highlight the effort and effectivity of the organization, which are already so astonishing. The amount volunteer hours put in are especially important because it shows the amount of effort, which is a key aspect of creating change. In addition, the Yellow Brick House blog also shares a number of meaningful articles that can help educate the public. Not only is this organization made to support abused women and children economically, put also there to educate the common public on how to protect abused women and children. Through proving education this organization is able to support the feminism movement by creating well educated, independent women that will not abide by societal expectations of domesticity.
