Music and Gender intersect in almost all facets of music, but how much it intersects is different for each person based on the type of music or the amount of music consumed. Starting with the middle 2000's, a time where I was growing up and getting into music, it was easy to see the roles of gender in music. From first glance, it was easy to see that mens music videos often featured beautiful women dancing without a lot of clothes on around artists flexing their money or assets. These women were in the video to catch the viewers attention while the lead artists appearance was meant to portray a lifestyle they lived or one that was popular at that time. Womans music videos during this time often featured a beautiful lead singer with equally beautiful women all dancing behind her. The lyrics varied, but they were almost always about empowerment and being a strong woman. Fast forward to 2018 and you see things haven't changed a whole lot since then.

Video example Rap

The lyrics in this rap song weren't demeaning to women at all, but it does paint the picture of a lot of Rap music videos in the 2000's. Nelly is rapping with his chain, sunglasses and grill on with Paul Wall, Ali & Gipp while they're flanked by beautiful women who aren't wearing a lot of clothes throughout the video. The woman in the video obviously accept the role, knowing they are supposed to dress and dance a certain way. Still, the women are definitely sexualized to make the video even more appealing.

Video example R&B

The lyrics in this R&B song show the big difference between masculinity and femininity in music. In this song, Destiny's Child are all speaking to the things they can do for a man in a positive way. They're speaking to the ways they can be great wives or girlfriends for the men they love. In this video, the women are upfront and the focus of the music (they're singing it) and go from verse to verse in the music changing their looks and the amount of clothes they have on. In music sang/rapped/played by women, you feel a different vibe typically than music played by men.

This is rapper Soulja Boy flexing his chains. Spending a lot of money for chains is important as a rapper as its a big style statement and everyone else has one. A big chain also shows that you have a lot of money, which Soulja Boy did.

This is a picture in an article of Beyonce and Jay Z, 2 of the most powerful people in music. The picture shows the twos personality well as Beyonce is more expressive ,while Jay Z is more conservative. Jay Z and his clothing resemble a businessman as he often calls himself rather than a rapper while Beyonce and her clothing represents the beautiful pop-star icon she is. Jay Z has worked hard to change his image to the general public while Beyonce has always been able to be herself.
