LOTF Characterization: Ralph

Some characterization we learn about Ralph is a leadership, dictator type of traits. This is first shown in chapter 1, when he decides to be the one to take the conch shell and rally the boys. The audience is shown by this a foreshadowing of the leader Ralph becomes in this story.

The conch is the symbol of strength and leadership. In the beginning, when Ralph used the conch to blow into, it was the key point in signifying the leader. The two boys both desire the conch as they desire leadership roles.

Civility vs Savagery is progressed in this story. They are all on this island with no parental units, which sets this theme up easily. These boys have no guide yet must attempt to all survive with one another. They go through paths, journeys, and problems with less knowledge, in the hopes to find a solitude.

Piggy

Some things we learn about Piggy Is that he is the opposite of Ralph, he is a shy, low confidence character. Even though he is very smart, he constantly gets made fun of by the other children. He is portrayed in the story's beginning as the operation's brains and the duo's quieter side.

Jack

Some characterizations shown in Jack are strictness and cold. In the beginning, it is clearly shown he used to be the group leader. And by the way that the story conveys Jack, he is shown to be this ruthless and strict leader where the group must obey all rules.

Simon

Simon is conveyed as a genuinely good person. He is down to earth and thinks morally. Throughout the first few chapaters, we can see that he doesn’t follow everyone else and goes onto his own path.

The Fire

In the beginning of this book, the fire has a more positive symbol. It is shown as hope. This is because the fire can be used as a signal and gives the boys the hope that they may be able to be rescued. But it also could symbolize danger, which causes duality in the fire. Fire also can get out of control, and destroy things in its path, creating a good and bad signal.

State of Nature

Throughout the recent chapters in this book, a heavy theme of nature is presented. As the boys have realized their state of freedom and survival, the human instincts start to kick in. They attempt signals, hunting, and exploring. But they also get into problems with each other, which is another human nature state.

Social Contract

In this book, the boys attempt a social contract in the beginning. They try to find a leader, and Ralph then appoints Jack to lead another group for a specific task. This human instinct is how they all plan to survive. They try to form a type of leadership to dictate that the people can follow.

Ralph 4-6

In development of this book, a large character development in Ralph has been directly shown. As the boys are on the island for a longer period of time, Ralph starts to realize that his civil and calm attempt at leading is not going to help the boys survive. He realizes the boys starting to realize they have unlimited freedom, and therefore changes his type of leadership. He becomes more strict, rude, and controlling. Jack and Ralph had also had battles of leadership, which was the reason for his character development.

Jack 4-6

Throughout these chapters, we can see Jack get more frustrated with his lack of power. He wants to lead more and more but his spot was already taken by Ralph. They fight and argue which only grows Jack into a more hateful person. He becomes bitter and angry toward Ralph and everyone else for how this leadership came about.

Simon 4-6

Throughout these new chapters, we see Simon continue to isolate himself. He is one with nature and does not like to be with the other people.

Piggy 4-6

Piggy in these chapters does not change significantly. He continues to try to help and be active in helping Ralph, but the boys still mock and make fun of him. He has hope to help everyone survive, but also is shy and afraid of speaking out, due tgo the backlash he gets.

The Fire 4-6

In these chapters, we can see the fire start to die without replacement for awhile. This kind of shows the faith and hope the boys have in having someone see their signal and being rescued start to die. All the fire has done is show danger, and kill the boys, and is not a positive or hopeful symbol anymore.

The Conch 4-6

The conch in these chapters still hold its power, although some, like Jack, start to question it. Some believe that the conch is simply a shell and not as powerful as they once sought it out to be. So as it still works, it is starting to lose power the longer the boys are on the island.

Roger and Maurice 4-6

Roger and Maurice in the beginning of chapter 4 start to ruin the littles sandcastles and torment them. I think a major theme represented in this is civility vs savagery. This shows that they are still boys and humans that realize the freedom they have. This shows the human reaction of younger kids when no consequences or discipline is given. Instead of adhering to rules, because of possible consequences, they can act out however and get no punishments.

The Masks

The mask represent the hunters front. They want to seem tough and more powerful, and the mask is their way of pretending to be that. Although they keep messing up and letting the rest of the boys/group down, they put on the mask to hide their embarrassment.

The Beast (how its state of nature)

The beast in this book is represented in the boys themselves. The way we see this is by their growing fear or lack thereof. Whenever the boy would become more savage, the beast would grow, and their fear would grow with it. The mystery and constant fear of unknown grows on these boys, which grows the beast.

Id in everyones mind is labeled as the "bad side". It can be described as intrusive thoughts, or temptations to do something or anything without thought out future consequences. It is the side that is carefree and is more of a rule breaker.

This side is the labeled "good side". It follows all rules, thinks about any and every consequence possible before performing any action, and always wants to do the right thing. It guides the person to make the rule following choices, and avoid any problems or conflict.

This is the persons daily mind. It is in the middle, taking in what both the Super Ego and ID have to say about certain decisions. It goes back and forth between these two when deciding what to do in any situation.

Piggy in the later chapter starts to struggle more with his superego and ID. He wants to speak out and try to share his thoughts, but he knows if he does he will probably get mocked and made fun of. His superego is telling him follow Ralph and just quietly help him, while his ID is telling him to speak out because he is wiser than most.

Ralph has a strong sense of Superego. He doesn't struggle as much with both sides of his ego, but he still does have some questioning. He wonders if he should be hard on the boys, or just sit back. His superego is telling him to sit back, as continuing to rule these boys may cause resent towards him. Meanwhile his ID is telling him to rule and be a powerful leader, no matte the feelings of the boys.

Jack leans more toward his ID consistently. He does whatever is intrusive thoughts leads him to do, and does not think about future consequences that may occur due to his careless actions.

Throughout these recent chapters, Jack has been shown top become more aggressive and evil. He took boys with him, but still grew rage and yearned for more. He then used the conch in order to dethrone Ralph, and get the boys on his side. Even though he was a role model throughout this book for some of the boys, he still wanted more, and became more determined for it.

The Conch 7-9

In these recent chapters, we still see the conch as a power holding symbol. Although in this book we have seen the conch not hold slo much power as it once did, it still is followed by the boys and a sound that the boys have been conditioned to. Thus development shows that the conch itself does not represent any power, it all depends on the person holding it.

The Beast 7-9

Through these chapters, we have seen the beast grow. This beast has slowly revealed itself to be part of the boys mind, rather than a real thing. The beast represents fear, especially toward Jack. As the younger boys fear more about survival or Jack and his power, the beast gets bigger, but as they're calmed down, the beast also gets small or is thought about less.

Jack and the Pig 7-9

Jacks killing of the pig shows the state of nature, as well as civility vs savagery. It shows the type of human figure Jack is, and how his instincts guide him to be more aggressive. Jacks nature is to kill or be killed, and has been developing to savagery the longer that he has been on the island.

Simons Death 7-9

Throughout mostly chapter time, the author tries to show how the theme of civility vs savagery has taken over. The savagery has invaded the boys minds and they have become these inhumane people with no sense. It is trying to be shown the savagery and development that grows, after human instincts are given freedom for long periods of time, with no consequences. It is similar to the sow, where these boys have jumped the gun and let their minds take over without any common sense.

Ralph Ego 7-9

Throughout these chapters, it can be proven that Ralphs ego, has leaned more toward his Super Ego. He starts to fear the backlash, or just not care. He becomes sad as the boys have started to turn to Jack, and listen to him , even though Jack his not a thoughtful about everything, and rather just lets his savagery take over. Ralphs care about surviving, and leading the boys to freedom is slowly dying/fading.

Fire 10-12

In the beginning of this book, the fire was portrayed to be a sign of hope. As the fire was lit, the hope and faith that they may be seen and rescued was always there. But as the book has now progressed, we can see the hopelessness the fire brings instead. The fire constantly weakens or dies out, as the boys start to give up and feel weak in their ability to survive. This fire can represent the theme of "Loss of Innocence". It shows as the fire dies, the boys lose their innocent thoughts of being rescued.

The Beast 10-12

When the beast was first mentioned in this book, it was not so heavily discussed, and more brushed over, but as the book went on, the beast became more powerful and bigger in the boys mind. This beast represents the actions of the boys themselves. Not so much a monster, but more of the boys becoming the monsters. As the boys become more ruthless and savage, this beast follows them, which causes more and more fear and power to this beast.

Stanford Prison Experiment 10-12

This experiment and book both share similar situation types. In the experiment, the two groups were given most freedom, depending on the group role they took on, just like how the boys had freedom after being on the island. In the book, the boys took on their new group very harshly. The became heavily cocky, and overly confident in their power. They became ruthless and angry toward their old group leader, causing the savagery they had developed throughout the book.

Characterization 10-12

Jack- Jack becomes a a corrupted leader. At the beginning of the book, we did see a small start to his anger, due to his loss of power, but the development of thus book has only filled him with rage. He "tortured Sam and Eric", and couldn't have enough. Although most boys were on his side, he punished them anyway, making him cruel and ruthless.

Ralph- Throughout these chapters, Ralph did not have any major significant change. While yes, he did have emotional changes, after Piggy's death, his need for the signal fire, and after Jack's new tribe chased after him, he only just lost hope. He grew angry after being rejected from Jack and the boys, but the only feeling he could feel was loss of hope, as he had nothing to survive. That was only until the "Naval officer" came to the rescue. He suddenly regained his joy and faith in being saved, although without piggy, it wouldn't be the same.

Piggy- Piggy only had small development in chapter 10-11. Piggy throughout this book has become slightly more confident and vocal. But even though he had become more strong about who he was, he was still shy and weak. This is what led to his death. His sheepish personality is what has always put him on the sidelines, and inevitably hit by a boulder, knocking him to his death.
