Amy Lowell uses detailed emotions and descriptions in her work "September, 1918" as a way to describe the effects of WWI as she manages to find a sense of peace during the war. Along with the hope for a change and her desire to find that peace and tranquility again.

The sudden shift in the mood of the poem went from discussing about a perfect autumn day to stating "soon there will be no war". This statement and the notion of war as something that is grim, ruthless, dreadful (all these negative connotations), disrupts the light, bright and positive flow the poem had going on. Similar to what war actually can do, interrupt peace. The war had disturbed these calm and beautiful days of life and now she has to "balance (herself) upon a broken world".
