The 1920s are well known as the "Roaring Twenties" and "The Jazz Age." F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of "The Great Gatsby," coined the term "The Jazz Age." It was an decade that was considered the first modern and was a reaction to the devastation that was World War I. Because of the mass migration from rural areas to the cities, many jazz musicians came to major cities and jazz music and dance escalated to popularity. As jazz had just become a part of American culture, it was fitting for Fitzgerald to include it in his novel. Music plays during different parts of the novel to convey the desired mood through another medium.

Jordan Baker had just finished explaining Daisy's and her friendship during last 5 years to Nick Carraway. Jordan went over how she recalled a lieutenant sitting with Daisy in 1917 that she concluded to be Jay Gatsby. This song was playing as Jordan and Nick drove away from the Plaza. This is before Jordan tells Nick of Gatsby's request to have Daisy over to his house.

This is the day Gatsby has Nick and Daisy over at his house. He brings Daisy, Nick, and Klipspringer, his servant, downstairs to show off to Daisy. Klipspringer first plays "The Love Nest" and says to be "out of practice." Gatsby then demands that he should just play and Klipspringer plays "Ain't we got fun" right before Nick decides to leave.

Fitzgerald included this song because it connects to Gatsby's infatuation with Daisy Buchanan, his previous lover. The song is about a man who believes he is "the sheik of araby" which translates to leader of romance. The man goes on to say that the woman's love is his and that they will rule together. This reflects Gatsby as he hopes have Daisy's love and share a life. This song influences nervous mood in hopes of Gatsby getting Daisy or anticipation of events not going as planned.

Fitzgerald included this song in the novel because the song reflects the roaring 1920s, the era the setting is in. During the twenties, people challenged traditions and centered their lifestyle around jazz music and freedom. The song is about having fun even despite having financial struggles and responsibilities. Despite none of the main characters having money problems, they still show elements of the era. Those in West Egg are free from their parents, Gatsby and Nick are not married, and Gatsby throws parties for fun. This song influences an exciting mood as the audience experiences the party atmosphere and freedom that the characters have.

Fitzgerald includes this song because it shows what Gatsby desires with Daisy. The song is about a couple that dances late at night and does not want to stop. The couple are so in love with each other that they do not want to stop no matter the time. This reflects Gatsby wanting this type of idyllic love where it is just him and Daisy forever. This creates a peaceful mood.

This song relates to "Sheik of Araby" because both singers/narrators sought after a love interest. This song is about a girl who likes a boy and believes that they belong together. Just like the previous song, this song creates a nervous mood as the audience is left questioning if the singer and the love interest get together and shows the infatuation of another.

This song is about having the freedom to do drugs and alcohol and having fun without caring about others' opinion of them. This song also creates an exciting/carefree mood as the audience is influenced by how carefree the artists are.
