So how does social media influence food choices? With the average person now spending over two hours a day on various social media platforms, it’s only natural that influencers/celebrities we follow online affect our real-world decisions around our well-being.

4. Skinny Food Co ad by influencer Chloe Ferry

Chloe Ferry is an English television personality from Newcastle, known for being a cast member in the MTV reality series Geordie Shore. with 3.4Million followers, Chloe is regularly seen to promote the companys product "The skinny food co". this company sells "zero calories" "zero sugar" syrups and sauces. The use of the zero calories and low zero sugars in these products can have benefits if trying to reduce calories , however i find this product very harmful and misleading to the consumers. the idea that the word "skinny" is idolisied on this packaging can be harmful to consumers. the biggest offender are products branded with the word skinny because it's a catchy word that appeals to many people and can advertised on any product with no regard to nutrition facts. The use of buzz words such as "GUILT -FREE" on these products can also be harmful to the consumer. why is it we should feel guility in the first place with food? it seems somewhere amongst the constant battle to market healthier food products, the phrase ‘guilt-free’ was born. consumers of this product may develop a negative relationship with food if they feel guilt should be attached to certain foods and the word skinny is the outcome if you consume their syrups. the fact that skinny co foods colaborate with influencer chloe ferry who has a reach of millions of followers, predominately females can cause great harm. harmful margeting can intice these women to buy this products by the influence of chloe and it may lead to negative relationships with food in the future. Terms such as skinny and guilt free promote the ethos of orthorexia – an intense obsession with healthy eating.

Eating disorders are a very real issue for a lot of young people and to see Kim Kardashian actively encouraging her fans to develop an unhealthy relationship with food is terrifying and gravely concerning. the company's policy of using influencers as advertisers is creating unrealistic standards and encouraging unhealthy dietary habits—the kinds that can lead to eating disorders. kim kardashian with millions of followers has zero qualifications in nutrition. zero knowledge in the scientific evidence on healthy weight loss and with her huge platform to promote appetite suppresent is completely irresponsible with her followers consisting of both young teenagers and adults. It is estimated that about 20 million women and 10 million men in America will have an eating disorder at some point in their lives. promoting appetite suppressants sends an incredibly unhealthy message to her fans who have the potential of being influenced by her posts.

the fact of the matter is that the use of an appetite supressant is a huge red flag to disordered eating. for you to supress your appetite there is far more than a lollipop that will help. a deeper level of concern should be taken with examining your overall diet and as to why you need to supress yo appeptite?

'skinny jab' is a drug that is injected daily. It's an unfortunate name as it sets the expectation that people who use it will suddenly become 'skinny'. Again the fabricated use of the word skinny as marketing tool on the packing is completely playing on the emotional aspects of the female consumer. why is skinny something that should be desirable and something that should be used to promote a product.
gemma collins is known for struggling with weight loss over the years.. for her as a well known character on social media to share her "success story" it can resignate with a lot of females and skinny jabs main target group are females... primarily by the design of the website where you see images of females.. so you can assume females are the target audience for this product. the implication that this injection will cause them to loose weight seems unrealistic and has never been scientifically proven. there is no knowledge on the website that tells you what the injection consists of.whats even more misleading about this injection is that it is packaged alongside a healthy eating an exercise plan.however if the consumer is doing this healthy eating and exercise plan, where is the need for this skinny jab injection? For anyone who has struggled with their weight, the appeal is understandable.. however this marketing pitch by gemma collins is incredibly dangerous to the health of the consumer. there is no scientific evidence behind this jab that it eliminates fat and promotes weight loss on it own. it should be more important to address the potential risks with taking any medication instead of celebrities/influencers such as gemma collins in this instance to promote weight loss through this products.

one search on google images of boom bod promoted by influencers has given a variety of UK instagram influencers promoting the product that is book bod shots. Boombod is a weight loss "shake drink" which you're supposed to drink three times a day for at least seven days. 9. The company claims that you'll see results in as little as a week.
Another product on the market aimed at insecure and vulnerable women to help them lose body weight within 7 days.the active ingredient is a water-soluble dietary fibre known as glucomannan. Fibre can help aid weight loss, however ONLY because it increases satiety and is usually high in volume comparitive to calorie content, therefore individuals feel more satiated. a meta-analysis of all the clinical trials investigating supplementation of glucomannan has concluded that there has been no statistically signifiant weight loss shown when using the supplementation of glucomannan. When glucomannan is supplemented alongside a hypocaloric diet, yes, weight loss is achieved, however that is not due to the glucomannan directly, but infact a scientificallly proven calorie deficit. this misleading information potrayed by the company and the vast majority of influuncers with large platforms promoting this appeptite supressent is unsafe and not only unrealistic to supress you appeptite with a shot. the consumers appetite should not need to be supressed if you follow a balanced diet in a calorie deficit. this supressing of appetite can lead to damaging effects on relationships with food making the consumer to feel they need to not eat to lose weight. Here lies the problem itself, the main area that people need to work on here is behavioural change allowing them to change their lifestyle to facillitate the ‘results’ they want, which will be a long term solution to a heathier life.

Karl Henry is one of Ireland’s most recognised and leading personal trainers and is the name that is synonymous with health and training in Ireland. Karl has a BSc (hons) in Sports Science and Sports Management from University College Dublin. a podcast published by karls podcast in colaboration with Dr. Jason Fung. NOTICE from the above statement neither karl or Dr Jason Fung have any qualifications/backgroung in nutrition.again as we seen before in Dr Doireanns podcast more people stepping out of thier expertise, giving advice to the wide audience of listenters on nutrition and providing false nutrition claims. these false claims can lead the leave the auidence left confushed and mislead. the community of nutrition has evolved so much in the past few year and is confushing and misleading as ever. when people hear so many un-factual claims made along side factual scientific evidence, it leads to confusion and possible health implications if false health claims are adhered to. In this podcast Dr. Fung(who promotes low-carb diets) in his line of work talks about a "fattening effect" of different foods. he states that when you eat salmon in comparison to cookies, the hormonal effects of our body are completeley different. he claims that gaining fat in the body depends on if the hormones in our body are telling us to gin body fat or not. Dr. Fung completely disconnects from the scienctific evidence of calories in Vs calories out when it comes to weight loss. he has a huge disconnect in the scientific reality of weight loss comes from a calorie deficit and is based on what you eat and what energy you give out. he's believe in hormones having control on weight loss and calories in Vs calories out is not useful in weight loss. Dr Fung makes weight loss in this podcast far more complex that what it is. this misleading information that karl henry supports is some what confusing to understand when there has been scientific evidence that weight loss occurs from a caloirie deificit. this fabrication on hormones solely controlling weight loss is not scientifically proven. he states that calorie reduction "almost never" works for weight loss .

To conclude, it is clear that the community of nutrition through the use of media in many forms such as the ones i have illustrated in this media diary can be very conflicting and confusing to the people who are seeking advice. through my research of influencers and celebrities on social and how they can influence food choices on the population. It was clear that many to none had a nutritional qualification background, many had huge social media platforms with wide auidence's of all ages. I believe these influencers/celebrities should have a responsibility to provide credible information based on scientific evidence through background and qualifications before advising/ promoting nutrition to the public through media as they are highly influential people. it is evident that most nutritional/health brands seem to collaborate with people with high followings on social media to sell there product to a specific audience. however this can be very harmful to the target audience as we have seen through the pile of misleading information and false health claims people are led to believe. the lack of qulifications these influencers and celebrities have can have a damagimg effect on the target auidence as these influentional people are not credible sources of information but people are led to beleive in the material they provide through there status. With the growing body of knowledge supporting the connection between diet and overall health, many consumers are taking personal health and nutrition decisions into their own hands. Individuals are becoming more reliant on nutrition information from sources such as websites, television, radio, newspapers, advertisements, friends, and family, thereby creating opportunities for nutrition misinformation and health fraud. the nutrition community can be a vulnerable place for people seeking advice on there health through the misrepresentation of health claims, which can range from a self-proclaimed medical expert who has discovered a so-called “miracle cure,” to a food supplement or drug that is promoted with unsubstantiated health claims. Accurate nutrition information should be science-based, peer reviewed, and replicable. Nutrition misinformation is not supported by science and may be misleading and incomplete. It can be challenging for consumers to tease out reputable versus fraudulent nutrition
information and claims. this is why it is so important for influencers/celebrities to hold accountable for there misleading actions to the public.
