The main reason that these movements existed in the first place is that they are minorities. People as a whole don't start acting completely different around people of a certain group just because there was a law passed. Which is really sad but true for both the disability and the LGBTQIA+ movement. Sadly in our current society time and hard work on the part of everyone involved is how we gain more acceptance. If you can't accept someone you are not very likely to teach about them either. That thing is otherness. Often including violence. If you look at the Black, women's rights, or the LGBTQ+ rights movement you can see that they all started with otherness. The people in these communities were alienated to the point that they could not live a normal life. They all started to fight back. They may have been small and they may have been big but together they brought on change. It all comes back to the word minority. Minorities aren't necessarily the group with less people. They are the group that is treated differently or often worse than others. An example of this is Women. The government doesn't want everyone to know how they poorly handled the civil rights activists and movements

For example in 1973 congress passed the Rehabilitation act that people with a disability were no longer allowed to be excluded participation based solely on the fact of their disability, the congress passed this law but it took the government four years to enforce this law. Another example of this is when the government refused to provide funding for native American education and cultural centers  and during a protest in South Dakota the FBI raided and killed two people, this was just one of this movements struggles with the government.

All of these movements started because there was inequality in some way. For example, older Americans started to speak up because there was discrimination and ageism against older people. I also noticed this with Americans with disabilities. Their playing field wasn't level, but they could do some things about it, like adding ramps for physically disabled people. It usually was straight, white, and most of the time christian men. I noticed this especially in women civil rights because the men didn't think that they deserved the pay that they got. A lot of the "minorities" tended to stick with each other and sometimes help each other out because they are in similar positions.

The real truth is that for hundreds of years America has had many instances where other people feel excluded and not welcomed. A lot of the time they get their rights and possessions taken from them. For example Native Americans have had their land taken from them. A group called Indians of All Tribes made a voice for themselves and took over Alcatraz island, they wanted their land back and funding for cultural and educational centers. They also walked many miles to D.C to spread the word that they wanted their land and rights. I think the only reason the government gave back land and gave rights to Native Americans is because they just wanted to make the american people happy. They also want to teach kids that they did the right thing in giving back their possessions instead of teaching kids that they did many terrible things.

Another example is in the Asian american civil rights movement when they got unfair working conditions and unfair pay just because majorities didn't think they could do as good a job as white men without ever giving them a chance to show them that they are just as capable.

I find it interesting how this demographic sets the benchmark for a lot of these movements. For example I think when Native Americans advocated to get their land backs they only got it to prevent looking bad and making it an even bigger deal.

I think reading these sources shed light to the fact that there will always be some sort of issue within any and every community. I feel that recognizing how there will never be a perfect society where everyone agrees and feels they are treated equally is important. On the other hand there is also always a way to make a difference in a community and spread awareness around civil rights movements. For example, the Stonewall riot was a huge breakthrough for the LGBTQIA+ community but to this day the LGBTQIA+ community still faces major issues when it comes to equality. Since the stonewall riot there have been so many breakthroughs, this goes to show there is always gonna be another way to move towards equality.

Examples of grassroots activism appear in the Disability Civil Rights Movement as well as the Women's Civil Rights Movement. In 1977, disability rights activists occupied federal buildings across the United States to protest the delay in implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which prohibited discrimination based on disability. The sit-in, organized by organizations such as the American Disabled for Accessible Public Transit (ADAPT) and the American Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities (ACCD), lasted for several weeks and ultimately led to the enforcement of Section 504. Similarly, the grassroots organizing efforts of the Women's Suffrage Movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were instrumental in securing women's right to vote. Suffragists organized rallies, marches, and public meetings, distributed literature, and engaged in civil disobedience to demand political equality. Grassroots organizations such as the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and the National Women's Party (NWP) played pivotal roles in mobilizing women across the country. Grassroots activism empowers individuals to take control of their own destinies and shape the narratives surrounding their rights and identities. Historical narratives are often shaped by those in power, who may prioritize certain events, figures, or perspectives over others. As we've learned in the past, patriotism plays a big factor in this. Dominant narratives shaped by patriotism may emphasize certain values and historical events that are considered beneficial to the national identity. This can lead to the promotion of a specific version of history or a selective interpretation of events that aligns with patriotic sentiments. Hence the omission or downplaying of civil rights movements that challenge existing power structures or present alternative narratives. The dominant historical narratives may focus on a limited set of movements or individuals, leaving others in the margins. For example, dominant narratives often neglect or misrepresent the struggles of indigenous peoples for their rights and self-determination. Since the beginning, Native Americans have experienced police and government harassment. In 1968, 10% of the population of Minneapolis was Native Americans. Still, Native Americans made up 70% of the prisoners in the city's jails. Majority of Native Americans lived in poverty, and faced greater economic hardship than any other ethnic group in the country in the 1960s. Unemployment of the indigenous peoples was 10 fold higher than the national average and was especially high on reservations. The average annual family income was $1,000 less than that of African Americans. Life expectancy was also much lower than the national average. This was the doing of the government yet that fact is not so much known. Historically, patriotism has often been intertwined with colonial narratives that promoted the dominance of settler societies over Indigenous communities. In the context of colonization, patriotism was often linked to the idea of manifest destiny or the belief in the superiority of the colonizing culture. This has prompted today's dominant narrative, which has caused the dispossession of Indigenous lands, forced assimilation, and erasure of Indigenous cultures. Indigenous rights movements are frequently overlooked or minimized in mainstream discourse, leading to limited public awareness and understanding. People started fighting for their own rights and sharing their experiences with discrimination and racism. I think they get recognized and people get scared so they ignore it. People are scared of change and power so they steer the other way or try to fight against it.  The only reason we have these movements is due to the injustice, Latinx people couldn't even speak Spanish without being beaten and killed or being insulted in front of classmates or by classmates and teachers. People of color in general cant leave their homes or even be in them without people automatically feeling attacked and disgusted causing people to be severely hurt and killed.

A giant poster or painting or the hardships people went through pictures of how people felt remembering that it's the injustice that made us powerful it made us stand up. It's okay to embrace your culture. I would want to be able to show everyone how the Latinx community worked from the ground up.
