My biggest take away is that this program looks really simple to implement and fit into what we already have happening in our team. I am looking forward to doing more collaboration with the school counselor. My only questions really are about effectively implementing this online or in a blended setting, questions I am sure everyone has!

1) What are 2-3 things about reinforcing and monitoring the lessons that have stood out to you? I liked that they are ways to use this program in other academic aspects. I like the formative and summative assessments. I like the home links that can be sent home and then collected. 2) After watching the module, what thoughts are you starting to have about how this program can be integrated into learning in your classroom? What questions are starting to form in your mind moving forward? what happens if the same students never turns in the home links?

Each week I plan to do all the work right away. Here it is Monday and I am trying to remember the module from last Tuesday! Sigh! I am all in with this program. It really is not anything that we did not address before. This program just plans it out for us. If Amy and I are not co-teaching as closely as we usually do, this is a way to stay connected in one more way. We held a collab session last week and are going to do our 1st PBL based on this content. "Exploring My Brain" will help the kids understand that they have a brain, their brain has many functions, they can learn about things to do and tools to use to help themselves and their brains work better and feel better!

I know in the past that problems seem to arise mostly during recess and even sometimes during specials. Giving our students these skills to take with them out of the classroom and into other areas of the school will be helpful for them to control their emotions. I also love that they will have these skills to also use at home!
I think having these skills reinforced everyday in the classroom is a powerful way to help them self regulate in order for them to be more successful.
I think this would be great to do during morning meeting AND as reinforcement at the end of the day in a closing circle. I also took the mindfulness curriculum - Mind Up training this summer and I can see a lot of similarities in how these can be taught hand in hand with each other.
My biggest question would be of course time - How on Earth am I going to get all I need to get done in a day! BUT... I also realize how important this is for students' well-being and the potential for making learning better for our students.

I like how simple Second Step is yet still gives students the tools they need. The three steps to reinforce skills they showed in the videos (Think ahead, reinforce, and review) only took a few short minutes to cover. This is something that can easily be brought in daily and worked on for short bursts of time within a classroom. I am looking forward to starting with this right away!

I'm excited to see how the parents react to the home links materials. I know that it can be hit or miss, but if the kids are excited to practice their new learning, it helps.
Regarding the training online, I feel like the program in general was good, but that final activity, watching a video and rating the teaching, was nearly impossible for me...so I'm glad it wasn't "graded".
The three-step post lesson authentic activities (anticipating, reinforcing and reflecting) seemed pretty straightforward as well, just integrating the updated vocabulary into my, and the students, daily lives.

I am really excited to get started in planning. I am already thinking of ways this could work remotely as well as in person. I feel this program connects us as a district with similar content and strategies for work at home. It can also be easily used along with other curriculums. As Leann stated we have already started planning our first project around the things we are learning. Some ideas that I have compiled by listening to all of you are...

Bitmoji classrooms

Vocabulary reviews

Learning targets at centers

Small break out rooms/ play to review lessons

Puppets shows- have students be experts

Creating tool box for students for individual use at school or at home

Create a circle around the room with x on the floor every six feet

Bring their own toys/stuffed animals instead of calm down bunny

Rehearse puppet plays and record so students can review with parents through online platforms such as zoom or seesaw! (Also, sharing with others so that they can see other teachers/adults)

Finally, I appreciated the review session with other teachers. I think this will be helpful in the planning process to find how we can help each other implementing other curriculums like mind up, formative five, kindness as well as others. Finding out what works and reinforcing all of these skills everyday and often can only help to build more confident and caring students.

The easiness of integrating this program is obvious and welcome. The common vocabulary is essential and being able to give strategies for dealing with a variety of emotions is critical in all aspects. The brain builders will be easy for transitions, the strategies will fall directly in line with Zones and Mindfulness activities. I am also hopeful it'll be a school wide curriculum to have common language.

In terms of integrating in the Fall, either in person or online, I am looking forward to integrating technology for partner work, having the home connection, and continuing to connect with all of you for further ideas and suggestions!

This week, I had a couple takeaways:
1. With the home links I just noticed it would be easy to plug in "lesson time" portion in my weekly newsletters or can foreshadow the following week's "lesson time" to encourage to reinforce and practice skills that they either learned or will be learning.
2. For data purposes whether it be connecting to a kiddo's IEP goal or just for data collection of using Second Step, could whip up a quick checklist with the list of students names to tally on each time saw a skill being used or practiced. Also a reminder to praise the kiddo up whenever skill is seen or used (: Could even use "eagle bucks" or adapted version of something similar that they would be interested in with our PBIS. Same with families as well to encourage to practice at home.
3. Looking over the curriculum connections, it gives me ideas to brainstorm out of the box ideas to incorporate the lessons in our 2.5 hour condensed early childhood classes.

My partner and I talked about how easy it would be to incorporate the lessons and activities during a morning or closing circle time. Although, we may have to be distance, I feel that there are many ways that we can accomplish the tasks. I especially like the unit cards where the academic connections can be found. On these cards, subject integrations include literacy, math , science, social studies, fine arts and physical educations. The Literacy component lists titles of books that can be used to reinforce skills that were taught. Another piece I like are the reflections. I am thinking maybe we can do these on Seesaw or Flipgrid. if we use these platforms students can respond to peer comments. This along with the weekly skills check will be good for progress monitoring. I am looking forward to digging deeper into the kit and planning the units. Maybe we can have a place where this group can share ideas our plans for different grades?

Common language, will be good for students to have, and could be a benefit for all children to have across grade-levels/school wide. I like the idea of the skills everyday section it can be easy to over look reinforcing certain skills but having this as a reminder will help. I feel like this will be easy to add into what we are already doing and will have a lasting positive impact on the kids.

1) Reinforcing and monitoring the lessons I think can have the biggest impact of the program. I like that Second Step provides scripted (daily practice, brain builder), components to reinforce, but also encourages teachers to find authentic experiences for children to use the skills. My hope is that I can be consistent with acknowledging the skills, because that will lead to kids themselves noticing their peers using them. 2) I have always tried to have a social/emotional learning target for activities/centers, but have had mixed success. I believe The Second Step program will allow me to better implement this. I have already downloaded the two (younger/older) read aloud lists and sent them to our tech integrator to see if she can purchase them. I think I would like to incorporate the books into the Home Links. If I can get multiple copies of books, I can setup a rotation system.

I like how Second Step seems to be all the things we are already doing, but in more of an intentional way, which I think is huge for kids in these younger grades to really understand. I am interested in seeing the parents perspective with the home links and I like how they are interactive. I am also looking forward to starting with this right away in my classroom and seeing how it can be integrated throughout my day. I also liked the "following through" cards.
