Federalism is a system of government in which the same territory is controlled by two levels of government. Generally, an overarching national government is responsible for the federal governance, governing the issues that affect the entire country, while the smaller subdivisions, states, and cities, govern the issues of local concern.

How did the use of recreational marijuana become an issue of Federalism?

Recreational marijuana has become a real issue of federalism because the consumers take advantage of the drug. Although marijuana is useful for some medical purposes, the consumer are mainly getting the drug for their own personal benefit rather than a medical reason.

What are the main points for this to remain a state issue? a federal issue?

Federal: According to federal laws, the distribution of marijuana is a federal offense under the controlled substance act. They believe that this drug has no medical value and is just a heavily abused substance. Marijuana businesses can only function as a cash only enterprise and they can not file tax deductions.

State: Despite the federal governments stand point, they are in favor of the legalization of marijuana. Former president Obama approved the use of this drug as long as the states abide by certain rules; Making it only for medical distribution.

The side I agree with the most is the Federal side of this situation. Marijuana is considered to be the most abused substance and people kill over the drug. I believe marijuana should not be legalized because everyone’s going to be using it for their own desires instead of using it for medical purposes. Marijuana also leads to addiction if the substance is abused and we see now a days young kids many of which aren’t even 15 yet smoking marijuana and getting in trouble with it.
