Hello everyone! We are the team from CUHK participating in the Jockey Club Sustainable Campus Consumer Project. Over the next two months, we will be organizing two events aimed at promoting the concept of sustainable fashion on campus. We will be collecting unwanted clothes for upcycling. 服裝生產的歷史原來已經演變咗幾個世紀 🌱👕 等我們一齊仔細睇睇棉質服裝嘅製作過程，了解佢地嘅歷史根源至到現代可持續的實踐！

👗 Textile Types: 

• Synthetic Fibers: Polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastane. 

• Natural Fibers: Cotton, wool, linen.  

• Recycled Materials: Made from waste like plastic bottles, fishing nets or carpets. 

🍃 Environmental Impact: 

• Synthetic Fibers: ⚠️ Durable but not eco-friendly due to microplastics, microplastics can enter the food chain and affect both wildlife and human health.   

• Natural Fibers: 💧 Resource-intensive. While they are biodegradable, yet production may require high water usage and pesticide application. 

• Recycled Materials: 🌟 Best for reducing waste!  minimizing the extraction and processing of new resources. ♻️ 

🧵 Clothing Labels Matter: Clothing labels provide critical information about the fiber composition of garments. By checking labels, consumers can identify sustainable options, such as "100% recycled polyester" or "organic cotton." Check labels for fiber composition to make sustainable choices easily!

我哋平日出街或者網購去買衣物，都會對環境資源這成間接影響，了解更多可持續嘅衣着選擇，原來可以對環境有好大改變！🌍✨ 

大家平時着嘅衣物都是由稱為纖維的幼線造成，我哋首先講吓主要嘅纖維種類： 

• 合成纖維：包括聚酯纖維、尼龍和人造毛，由人類經化學加工製成； 

• 天然纖維：包括棉、羊毛、亞麻，由農夫負責從動植物上收割採集； 

• 再生纖維：包括人造絲，或用舊塑膠瓶、漁網等廢物造成嘅物料。 

原來無論係最常見嘅聚酯纖維，或者天然纖維，都會耗用到大量嘅自然資源，我哋一齊嚟分析下唔同纖維種類嘅環境影響： 

• 合成纖維：⚠ 雖然耐用，但因為有微塑膠，所以會對環境造成負面影響，微塑膠流入海洋等，會影響到食物鏈，對野生動物同人類健康都有影響。 

• 天然纖維：雖然佢哋可以生物降解，但生產過程需要用好多水同埋化學品，可能仲要用殺蟲劑添，而且係死咗的動物身上獲取皮毛，都引起唔少道德問題。 

• 再生纖維：可以將廢物循環再用，但生產過程中都會用到大量樹木或者染料，塑膠始終都是有害化學物質，對人體同生物都會有潛在影響。 

🧵 想知道一件衫係用咩物料，睇佢嘅衣服標籤好重要！ 

衣服標籤提供咗關於纖維成分嘅重要資訊，透過檢查標籤，消費者可以識別可持續性較高嘅選擇，例如「100% 再生聚酯纖維」或者「有機棉」。檢查標籤上嘅纖維成分，就可以輕鬆做出可持續嘅消費選擇！

• Value Loss: Materials end up in landfills, losing all potential value.

• Process: Design → Use → Recycle/Reuse 
  Products are designed to be reused, repaired, or recycled, creating a closed-loop system. 

• Impact: Reduces waste, conserves resources, and minimizes environmental harm. 

• Value Retention: Materials stay in use, retaining their value for as long as possible.

• Current Proportion: Over 80% of the fashion industry still operates on a linear model. 😱

〰️線性時尚： 

過程：取用→製造原料→變成產品→銷售→廢棄 

影響：巨大嘅浪費、污染和資源耗損。 

失去價值：材料最終被填埋或焚燒，失去所有潛在價值。 

♻️循環時尚： 

過程：設計→使用→回收/再利用 產品被設計成可重複使用、維修或回收，形成一個閉環系統。 

影響：減少浪費、節約資源，並將對環境的傷害降至最低。 

保值：材料可繼續使用，儘可能長時間保留其價值。 

☸️現實： 目前仲有超過80%嘅時尚產業仍以線性模式運作😱

Overproduction: Creating More Than the Planet Can Handle 🌍👗 

1️⃣ Environmental Impact:  

• Resource Drain: Producing clothing consumes barrels of oil (for synthetic fabrics) and millions of trees (for fabrics like rayon). 

• Water Waste: The industry produces massive amounts of wastewater, often contaminated with toxic chemicals from dyeing processes. 

• Climate Crisis: Fashion contributes to 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than international flights and maritime shipping combined! 

2️⃣️️Social Issues:  

• Brands are pushing to produce faster, cheaper, and more than ever, often at the expense of workers’ rights and fair wages. 

• This “race to the bottom” leads to exploitation and unsafe working conditions in factories worldwide. 

Overconsumption: Buying Beyond What We Need 🛍️🌍 

1️⃣ Why Overconsumption Happens 

• Marketing and Fast Fashion: Brands push frequent trends and low prices, encouraging impulsive buying.  

• Rise of Online Shopping: Easy access and constant promotions drive unnecessary purchases. 

2️⃣ The Reality 

• Consumers today buy 60% more clothing than 15 years ago but wear items less often and discard them faster. 

• Most discarded clothes are not recycled—globally, less than 1% are repurposed into new garments. 

3️⃣ Clothing Waste 

• Fast turnover of fashion trends leads to massive waste. 

• Example: In Hong Kong, daily clothing waste could fill 4 double-decker buses—showing the alarming scale of overconsumption.

👔過度生產會帶來咩影響？ 

1️⃣環境影響 

🧶資源消耗：製造服飾需要消耗石油（合成纖維）和數以百萬計的樹木（人造纖維）。 

💧水資源浪費：種植棉花，染色和清洗布料等的生產過程，都會耗用大量淡水。 

🌩️氣候危機：時裝業佔全球溫室氣體排放量的8-10%，比國際航班和海運的總和還要多！ 

2️⃣社會問題 

💴許多品牌推動緊「更快、更平、更多」嘅生產模式 

💹快時尚要求的高效率，往往以犧牲工人嘅權利同公平工資為代價 

🪓導致世界各地嘅工廠出現工作環境惡劣，甚至剝削工人等的問題！ 

🛍️唔知大家平時會唔會買太多唔需要嘅物品？🛍過度消費到底點解會發生？ 

1️⃣鼓吹消費文化 

⏭️營銷與快速時尚：品牌頻繁推銷潮流同平價，鼓勵衝動性購買。 

📱網絡購物嘅興起：便捷使用的媒體同加上不斷嘅促銷，促使過度消費。 

2️⃣現代消費習慣 

👛現今消費者購買的衣物比15年前多60%，但穿著次數較少，丟棄速度也較快。 

  👕大多數被丟棄嘅衫都冇被回收，全球只有不到1%嘅衫被利用為新衫番。 

3️⃣服裝廢料 

🛒時裝潮流快速更替，導致大量浪費。  

例如：在香港，每日嘅服裝廢料可以裝滿4輛雙層巴士🚎😥 

係時候行動啦！透過支持可持續品牌、減少購買、購買時選擇質素而非數量，就可以幫助減少過度生產同減少有害影響。 🌱✨

1️⃣ United Nation Sustainable Development Goal 12 is to “ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns”, this represents a recognition by world leaders that unchecked production and consumption undermine global economic and social goals. 

2️⃣ Governments, regulators and non-profit groups have been working to come up with how to adopt regulations to reduce the impact of overproduction. France, for example, has enacted a law prohibiting brands from incinerating excess stock. 

3️⃣ From luxury consignment platforms to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), there are Brands supporting Circular Economy, actively promoting sustainable fashion to address the challenges posed by fast fashion. Let’s explore these inspiring brands that are leading the way in Hong Kong’s cicular economy movement  ! 

邁向永續生產同消費嘅旅程需要各個領域的合作，包括政府、企業與個人。 透過支持倡導循環經濟嘅品牌，並提倡更法規，我哋可以共同減少過度生產和過度消費帶來的負面影響。
