The school board of Little Rock Arkansas had plan to combine the public schools so black and white children can attend school together. 

During the Brown vs. Board of Education, the court unanimously sided with Thurgood Marshall that separate educational facilities could never be equal. Segregated schools violated the 14th amendment.

Nine African American students integrated into Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957.

The 9 were Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Thelma Mothershed, Melba Pattillo, Gloria Ray, Terrence Roberts, Jefferson Thomas, and Carlotta Walls.

Daisy Bates, was the state president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and became the student's’ adviser. 

Only three student ended up graduating from Central High. The others had to switch schools because it became physically dangerous for them due to protests

A group of nine African-American students enrolled in Central High School (an all white school) in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957.

 Governor Faubus sent the Arkansas National Guard to block the students from entering school grounds. 

President Dwight D. Eisenhower responded by putting the National Guard under federal control. He then sent in US Army troops to enforce the integration. They escorted the nine into the school.

 For the remainder of that school year, armed National Guardsmen patrolled the hallways

February 17, 1958 Minijean Brown was expelled for retaliating against white students bullying her.

On May 27, 1958, Ernest Green, the only senior of the nine, became the first African American to graduate from Central High.

Only three student ended up graduating from Central High. The others had to switch schools because it became physically dangerous for them due to protests.

In 1958, the members of the Little Rock Nine and Daisy Bates were awarded the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal for their contributions to the cause of civil rights. In 1999, the members of the Little Rock Nine received the Congressional Gold Medal.
