The Science Behind A Musical Canon

All music follows a specific effort or motive. Not only do we see musical canon in classical music and other "old world" musical stances, but we indeed see it in the music of today. Its not a formula to follow or a set of rules defining an era of music but it is simply the rhythmic composition technique that uses a melody that imitates itself. Its not limited to a specific time period or style of music but was used heavily in iterations of classical music.

As you listen to this, make the conscious effort to follow along with the tempo and understand how the different sections do have the same "feel" and "tone" but do not have the same mix of instrument, vocals, and sounds. Be mindful of what sounds you hear, and when they start, end, and change. Keep in mind that when you hear the first opening rhythmic tones of this song that you must keep that overlay of a melody in your memory and run it parallel to what you hear later in the song.

Now, this is great. Its a type of music that we have been listening to for the last 50 years and everyone knows this style and can read it very clearly. But, from a historical point (or should I say classical) music has followed a very linear formula. Indeed the composition has changed dramatically over the course of the past 70 years, music itself has had the same recipe for thousands of years. listen to this example of music and follow the same instructions from the last piece of music and apply it to the new piece.

In time we all begin to see how music affects us. To look at it under a new scope and understand it is all we have to do to gain a higher understand for it. WRR101.1 Plays en masse, a substantial amount of classical and contemporary works both current and from the long past. As you walk the halls of UNT you will see students with musical instruments of all types at all times of the day. spending an hour at the piano stairs of the Union can fill you with a lifetime of emotion from simple sounds on an instrument. In retrospect, classical music is not defined by its age or its writer, but by the emotion it carries through time, crossing perceptual planes and showing more and more people through time what a true classic is.
