Effective teaching method for me

An effective teaching method for me involves a balance of instruction and hands on learning. I have learned the best in classes that start out with a short lesson to provide a foundation for learning and then I spend time alone or in groups building on that foundation. I also learn well when I feel like I have a say in the structure of the class and have a relationship with the teacher.

Methods like this match well with positivism which encourages both teacher-centered and student-centered environments, this method also uses direct instruction and indirect as needed. This is where progressivism may come in to encourage more hands on and problem solving in the classroom. These two could create that balance that works well for me.

Student-centered philosophies allow students to have a say in the education path and encourages the students to learn more about themselves. Especially constructivism, which involves creating a personal meaning through education.

Teacher-centered philosophies allow more structure within the classroom, which can be beneficial to students. Behaviorism is also important in teaching students how to act in society which involves lessons that will last a lifetime.

Progressivism seems to lie in between teacher-centered and learner-centered as it encourages curiosity while still shares responsibilities between teachers and students to improve society.

I do not identify with one major philosophy, my education philosophy is a mix of many of these major philosophies. I would define closest with progressivism along with pieces of positivism and constructivism. This allows a spectrum of learning to encourage a well-rounded student.

My current educational philosophy is centered on the idea that education should prepare students to be the best version of themselves and be taught how to navigate through life.

Within my classroom I would like to connect the math and reading that we learn to the real world and prove the importance of learning these concepts to my students. I would like to make learning hands-on and encourage creativity so that students enjoy learning. Students will be evaluated through observable and measurable tasks. I want my students to feel cared for and supported by me in their academics and their everyday life.

Discipline in my classroom should be fair and flexible to fit each student and the action. I want discipline to be a learning opportunity so that students can understand why we should behave in a certain way in the classroom.
