For me, the most significant learning experience arose from my time living, working, and travelling abroad in The Peoples Republic of China (PRC). During this time, I developed a greater understanding and appreciation for Domain 7: Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice. Learning of the PRC's education programs (biology, nutrition, sanitation, infectious diseases, and simple medical treatments) to promote healthy lifestyles was enlightening. The PRC’s civilization has continually absorbed diverse traits and traditions from neighbouring powers such as: Confucian ideologies, Guanxi (relationships), Daoism, Buddhism and Christianity. This knowledge will be valuable to me in the workplace to ensure I am reflective in my practice, to maintain an awareness of my own culture, beliefs, and biases thereby ensuring I am providing culturally responsive, person-centred, and family-focused care. During my work placement, I will need to use these reflective techniques to avoid making any assumptions or generalisations about the patient.
<sup>
Domain 7: Professional Practice
Competency Standards Framework - Migrant & Refugee Women's Health Partnership (culturaldiversityhealth.org.au)
</sup>

Gamer, R.

Migrants and refugees in Australia are particularly vulnerable and classed as disadvantaged citizens. If they are ineligible for Commonwealth assistance, have no access to low-income Health Care Cards or Medicare services, survival in the new country becomes difficult, especially if they do not have the right to work.

My grandparents lived and worked in Fiji in the late 50s- early 60s and during this time my mother was born in Suva, Fiji. My grandfather was a very passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed Fiji’s multicultural tropical lifestyle. During my childhood, my mum continued the tradition of promoting outdoor activities with a steady diet of seasonal or tropical fruit (bananas, coconuts, and mangoes etc) fish, meat, and sweet potatoes. I grew up on a rural property where we had chickens, cows, sheep etc and were taught how to milk a cow, grow vegetables and fruit. At our family gathering (birthdays, holidays/ Christmas, or Easter) we celebrate with a seasonal fruit platter and fresh meat or fish. I enjoy continuing this tradition of growing fresh fruit and vegetables with my daughter.
