The Owlet sock monitor provides peace of mind for parents. The smart sock has brought countless hours of sleep to many parents since the launch of the product in 2015. What is being called the smartest sock of 2018 uses pulse oximetry to monitor and track the infants heart rate and oxygen levels while they sleep. The base station sounds an alarm if the oxygen levels or heart rate go outside of the preset alarm ranges notifying parents of an abnormal reading. Data trends and alarm history can be stored for up to one month and shared using the Connected Care Application available only on iOS.

In my opinion and experience this innovation has proven to be not only an effective use of technology but also potentially life saving. The use of cardiorespiratory monitoring at home has come with many mixed reviews some stating that it could increase stress and anxiety in parents. The peace of mind this device offers, even if it is a placebo effect, makes the hefty price tag worth every penny. I would like to see the Connected Care Application offered to more than just the Apple users. The data collected while using the Owlet Smart Sock (OSS) would be useful in providing care to not only term infants but also premature infants with undiagnosed or missed diagnosis of health problems. Further research needs to be done, but I think the general population having access to this device could reduce the rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) related deaths.
