automatic processing- to perform a task with little conscious awareness or mental effort
controlled processing- to perform a task with conscious and alert awareness
selective attention- paying attention to one stimulus instead of another

Incogruent- not matching, interference
theory- the reason it is much easier to read the words how they are written rather than the the colour of the ink is because it is a natural instinct. A person has been reading all there life so they have good practice at ( automatic processing) Where as a person doesn't say the colour of the ink of a word daily. This task requires selective attention and which is why it is a difficult task to Incongruent  words

4. Complete the 1st test and read out the words ( congruent)


5. Once completed write down the time taken to complete the test and the number of errors made in your results sheet ( the experimenter writes down the number of errors.
6. the complete the 2nd part of the test and read the colour of the ink the word is written in (incongruent)
7. Repeat step 5

8. repeat steps 4 and 6 and complete both test 5 times ( write down time taken and number of errors made.

2.
