Hunters and gatherers migrated into the area about 10,000 years ago at the end of a ice age. They created things like debris piles that are still visible to this day. Then the next people to come into the area were the Ancestral Puebloans and they raised domesticated maize, beans, squash , and lived in the villages. Not that many of their dwellings have been found expect the markings they left on the rocks. Eventually 700 years ago the Puebloan people left the area and Nomadic Shoshonean people such as the Ute and Paiute came into the are and meant the first Europeans in 1776 .

Many years after the tribes and groups roamed the area Europeans explored the Arches. The first evidence of Europeans in the area came from Denis Julian who was a explorer who left his name and date in one of the rocks.. The date on the rock was June 9, 1844. Many other traders and trappers rode their dusty horses through the moab region for decades before any attempt was made to settle the area. Finally in the 1880s and 1890s the region was settled permanently by a mix of ranchers, prospectors, and farmers

What came to become the arches we know today used to be all flat land about 65 million years ago. The constructive geological forces caused these buried sandstones to be wrinkled and folded which created lumps across the area called Anticlines. After these lumps were created the entire region began to rise, going from sea level to thousands of feet in elevation. The forces of erosion soon started to carve layers of rock away one by one making them thin and brittle. This also created more fractures in the rocks making it easier for water to seep through into the rock causing it to break down even more. Throughout this whole process the fractures cause the rocks to freeze and expand, which causes the bigger bigger parts of the sandstone to break off. Slowly but surely after these fractured rock layers are fractured they transform into fins and these fins then transform into Arches.

The Arches include some interesting ecosystems. Some of the predators include mountain lions, coyotes, snakes, hawks, bobcats, and even bats. Other animals in the Arches are wood rats, skunks, deer, lizards, cottontails, and chipmunks. The plant life in Utah's Arches are abundant too. The plants include cacti, purple sage, Russian thistle, moss, or yuccas'. Arches, about 65 million years ago, was a dried-up sea bed which was a few thousand feet high and was created out of sandstone. Rain since then has eroded away some of the many layers of sandstone into today's Colorado river.

In 1923, Alexander Ringhoffer, who was a prospector, wrote to the Rio Grande Western Railroad in an effort to publicize the area and gain support for creating a national park. He lead railroad executives on hikes into the formations and they believed that the area could attract more railroad customers. The government sent research teams to investigate and gather information about the park so they could see what to do with the area.

On April 12, 1929 The President at the time Herbert Hoover established a Arches national monument, and over time the parks boundaries expanded. Finally in 1971 Congress made the Arches a National Park.
