Gifted education is mandated under Legislative Act 106.  Also known as the Alabama Exceptional Child Education Act.

Specific eligibility requirements consist of the following multiple criteria.
    1. Aptitude. Aptitude is  assessed through an individual or group test of intelligence or creativity. Torrance/NNAT
    2. Performance. At least three examples of student performance approved by the Alabama State Department that indicate the student is performing at high levels in academic or creative fields when compared to others of his or her age, experience, or environment
    3. Characteristics. A behavior rating scale designed to assess gifted behaviors (TABS) is used
    GRST (Gifted Referral Screening Team) Team consist of the student’s teacher(s), gifted specialist, counselor, administrator
