The slang term 'Hyphy' came from the word 'Hyperactive'. This makes a lot of sense because Bay area sounds are very bass driven to make the audience go crazy, in other words 'Go dumb or go Hyphy'. If the beat is not bass driven in terms of fat 808s and heavy sub bass then its not a bay area song.

Keak Da Sneak invented the term 'Hyphy' and was the leader of the hyphy movement during the mid 90s. He was a trendsetter from the music to the clothes and music videos. He had a major hit with E-40 called 'Tell me when to go' which created buzz around California, so much buzz that the USA Today interviewed E-40 and he said "Every record label was getting at us at that time, but we fumbled the ball,". This shows the increase in recognition from other states at that time.

Lyrically bay area music and hip hop in general have some similar context. Talking about crime, police, money, drugs, sex and violence.

However bay area songs tend to talk about life in where they reside 'going stupid' on a beat and making up a dance for it to trend sometimes.

In terms of artists flowing with the beat there's a particular style that artists such as Sob x Rbe and blueface do. According to Hillary Crosly Croker falling off the beat is a style which E-40 started.
E-40 started this flow in the late 90's and people found it weird but quickly grew on people and made it a style.

In 2010 bay area sound resurfaced again as Dj Mustard selected a few stylistic features from bay area sounds such as the fast tempo and a catchy synthesised melody to give a club oriented feel.

Dj Mustard made hit singles like Rack City by Tyga peaked at #53 on the Billboard charts on the 17.3.2012, Don't Tell em by Jeremiah hit #5 on the Billboard hot 100 on the 14.11.2014 , 2 on by Tinashe charted at #24 on the Billboard hot 100 on the 9.8.2014.
These figures shows just how much Dj Mustard had impacted the charts and influenced today's music.

Whilst Dj Mustard brought bay area sound to the forefront in the West Coast and internationally. According to an article on East Bay Express artists such as Skipper and Jay Ant were upset that their home signature sound was taken by those who were not from the bay.

On the record 11 tracks were used 6 tracks consisting of claps which gives the song pure rhythm and flow.

Straight away the fat 808 bass is in your face with a mid tempo of 101bpm. The bass sets the tone for the record and compliments the rhythmic claps on the song.
This definitely has some hyphy features. The 808 bass is simple yet fat and boomy this is what gives the track the bay area bounce, however without the claps there is no rhythm and T - Minus made sure there was a variety of claps in this track. What I love about this track in particular is the way a few claps were used but they filled the spaces of the beat so the beat does not sound too much or too empty.
