I am a second grade teacher, and I have worked with children for five years now. As we progress in time, we see women succeeding and pushing the boundaries in all areas, however we still hold stereotypes for females. I believe that if we teach our students about women's rights at a young age, we can stop the stereotypes from spreading, and we can also open up the idea that all people, no matter their gender, can do whatever they so choose!

This whimsical nonfiction book is incredibly entertaining and inspiring! It shares the story of a girl in the 1830's in England who aspired to be a doctor, however it was only considered a man's job. She fought her way through the stereotype, and ultimately became the first female doctor. This book is great, because it shows that women can obtain any career, despite what the media might portray.

These books are all high quality children's literature, and deserve to be in your classroom library, and on your lesson plans! To use these in the classroom, I would put discuss them during women's history month, as the theme of all of these books deals with women's rights. I would use all of them as read-alouds, as they are all very entertaining to read, and express many different perspectives. There are many activities you could do such as reading Drum Dream Girl as a class play, or watching videos about Elizabeth Blackwell.

What Specific Activities can I do?

To help your students truly grasp and understand these books, I have come up with different activities you can do. For example, for each of the books you can have the students create a venn diagram. One side of the venn diagram is on the stereotypes of what people think females should do and the other side of the venn diagram is on what the females in the books did. This is a good way to show the main theme of the stories. Another activity that you can have your students do is to have them make a plot chart of before and after. For example, with Drum Dream Girl, before she was told she could not play the drums, and after, she was allowed to play with the boys. You can have your students also mention what happened in between to allow that to happen. They can draw it out with crayons to make it more fun.
