Write an initial (1-2 paragraph) draft of your teaching philosophy on your own personal Padlet (below). We will work to evolve these philosophies throughout the semester so do not feel that they need to be mature at the beginning. We will use this Padlet as a space to post weekly reflections that assist you in evolving your philosophy. [Click the pink plus (+) sign in the lower right to create a post-it.]

I believe all children deserve a safe and caring learning environment, where I can meet students needs to help them be successful within my classroom as well as in life. Therefore, I will ensure this by creating relationships with each of my students so I can really understand their needs, so I can be the best resource for them. I will also use diversity to include students into my classroom. The most important thing for me about teaching is students’ wellbeing. If students are doing well then, they can really apply themselves to their education rather than other life problems.

I also believe learning is a social endeavour it just as important for students to create relationships as it is what they learn. Its through these relationships that students are all able to acheive sucess.

This week really spoke to me about being aware of my emotions and students emotions during collaborative communications. I also really liked talking about the importance of relationship building with students, I think shooting the shit with students is the way to really connect with them. Within my teaching philosophy I do believe I have included climate building, but I would like to add more about reflective listening.

Promote value based leaders/emotionally aware thinkers. This can be acheived through Socio scientific issues, which is a great way for students to experience emotion with their learning. Learning is an experience so it should be occpanied with postivie emotions. "A student may not remember what you taught them, but they will remember how you made them feel". Students are more likely to remember events/teachings if they have an emotional connection to it. I think another way students can experience emotion within the classroom is through my interactions with them. I.E. making jokes and relationship building, overall having a positive and invinting demeanor. The flight instructor story really stood out to me.

Today helped enforce my teaching philosophy of utilizing active learning within the classroom. Especially seeing the data of the implementation of active learning increases students letter grade by 6%, and not doing lecture style classes reduces failure rate by 55%. The article I read 'Evaluating the Effectiveness of students active learning in chemistry' related to my philosphy of having a student centered focus. Some things I will add to my philosphy will be students preceptions and assessment of the learning eviorment.

As the class contiues I have started to allign a lot of my teaching philosophy with Blooms affective domain. Mainly acknowledging students feelings and how they feel about their learning/the material. Students feeling are going to be a big part of my classroom and how I teach. I have also recognized that my style of teaching alligns with application of Blooms cognitive domain. This is reflective in how I would assess students learning because I would have students solve problems for them to demonstarate their understanding and learning.

Growth mindset/Grit is what got me to love chemistry so much. In high school I took chemistry and I absolutely loved being challenged. Though assignments and exams were a one and done deal, so what really drove me was to not fail. Within my classroom I want that sense of challenge though without the fear of failure. Something I would like to implement within the classroom is for students to receive feedback on assignments and have an opportunity to resubmit assignments to receive more points. This would help students to build grit and have a growth mindset. Within my classroom I want to strive to have a growth mindset within my life, to help be a role model for students.

Engaging in Kolb’s process was very nice to slow down and think about experiences that I have. Not only the experiences but how the experiences made me feel and what I was able to learn from that experience. I think this activity would be perfect for students. It allows for so much creativity and an opportunity for students to engage in the scientific method. The activity can be directly applied within my classroom of high school chemistry. I could see starting a unit with a scientific phenomenon that is a shared experience for the class. Students can make predictions and hypothesize why the phenomena occurs. Students could then create an experiment to test their hypothesis. For my philosophy I believe that phenomena-based learning is important for students to make a meaningful connection to what they are learning. In addition to learning is social and having students come together to have a shared experience is very important. A way to implement placed based learning is for students to engage in a socio scientific issue that is place based. Within Wyoming this could be renewable energy where students will have to either support or oppose renewable energy using chemistry to support their answers.
