WORLD WAR ONE
War: 21 million soldiers were wounded and a total of 8 million died during battle. 20 million killed worldwide. The cost of war-$338 billion. The great war left behind starvation, disease, and slaughter of civilians. It destroyed farmland and towns.
Influenza:
WW1 gave rise to the influenza epidemic. Around 1918 the "Spanish flu" as it was known made it's way through England and India. From there it spread to Europe, Russia, Asia, and the U.S. Left alone India lost 12 million people. The influenza can be seen as more destructive than the war itself since it wiped a total of 20 million people worldwide.
WORLD WAR TWO
War: Over 60 million people world wide died. The cost of the war in total is around $862.9 billion. This caused tremendous suffering in European countries because the war disrupted agriculture, destroyed transportation, and thousands died from disease. Bombed cities also suffered from radiation.

Direct War Costs:
USA- $288 billion
Great Britain- $117 billion
France- $111.3 billion
USSR- $93 billion
Germany-$212.3 billion
Japan-$41.3 billion

GENOCIDE
Genocide: is the calculated and methodical destruction of a national, religious, ethic, or racial group.
WWI: The Ottoman Turks killed Armenians during the twentieth century due to suspicion that they would try to gain independence and fight along side the Allied powers. The Armenians were already suffering before the war from higher taxes and less rights compared to Muslims. Armenians were stripped naked and forced to march through the desert until they die from either starvation or were shot dead if they stop to take a rest.

WWII: German Nazis killed more than 6 million Jews. This was called the Holocaust. German Nazis believed that Jewish people were the reason why Germany lost WWI and were responsible for all the problems and humiliation the nation was suffering. Those who were killed included Jewish children and adults, homosexuals, the disabled and mentally ill, communists or opponents of the Nazi party, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc. They were sent to concentration camps where they were either tortured, experimented on, or immediately killed.

Both targeted specific people.
Influenza Patients

The west signed peace treaties which led to huge land losses for the central powers. The Ottoman Turks only retained territory in what is now known as Turkey and the land lost by south west Asia were turned into mandates. The treaty of Versailles left feelings of betrayal and humiliation for the losers of the war. After the war the US was now considered a global power which lead citizens to reject the idea of dominant power because they didn't want to get involved in European affairs. Many Germans were left with hatred due to the unfair policies of the treaty.

The peace keeping organization was called the General Assembly, for it run on votes. In 1948 it established a Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Nuremberg Trials was the punishment of German Nazi war criminals. The trials represented 23 nations, 22 Nazi leaders were accused of committing crimes against humanity. Many were sentenced to jail for life or were given the death penalty. The Treaty of Versailles only established temporary peace between the Allies. However, the Nuremberg Trials was different because it established stability among all nations in the war.
