Week 4 of Baking

Aberame A/P Suseenthiran (A174059)
1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

In short, yes the objectives I had set for this project were fulfilled. To elaborate, my objectives for this posting were to understand the theory behind baking and using it, to dedicate time into refining my baking skills and to bake something delicious and visually appetizing for my family. For the past 4 weeks, I realized that understanding the theory behind baking came naturally as soon as I attended the online course hosted by yuppiechef. Not only that, by putting the knowledge into practice all the theory started making sense and helped me fulfil my objective of refining my baking skills and creating delicious desserts, some of which I even made changes to, to appease my palate.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

Trials and errors. Often times this can be the most frustrating part about experimenting. However this time I came around to enjoy it the most as making mistakes not only made me more diligent with my choices but also helped me understand the process of baking better.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

The most challenging part about this project was organizing. Let it be my time or my tasks, I struggled organizing in the beginning. Baking required time however not all the minutes are spent on making the dessert. 70% of the time I either had to revise my recipe or fulfil other elements of my task like shopping for groceries or making different elements of my dessert which don’t necessary involve baking like making the frosting. Tasks like these although are small may influence the outcome greatly. I had to make sure I planned out every minute of my designated bake time to make sure my final outcome turned out well. In the first two weeks of my project, I hit a few bumps in organizing my tasks properly, this resulted in insufficient ingredients, melted frosting from letting in out on counter too long and a failed cake because I didn’t pay enough attention to the instruction from being distracted by my other baking project.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

Learning from online sources has been a huge success to me. I cannot believe how much of a learning curve baking has been to me with only online baking tips and recipes. I started with little to no knowledge and I ended up with so much new information that has made me capable of baking a variety of desserts.

Not only that my last dessert cream cheese tarts with strawberry sauce has been a huge success. I incorporated all the new knowledge I attained and managed to make something so delicious which turned out to be a crowd pleaser.

5. What can be improved in this project?

The recipes I chose. I opted for easier recipes since I was afraid of failing. However, I wish I would have given recipes with harder techniques a go as that would’ve enabled me to learn newer skills.

MOHAMAD SYAHRUL IQMAL BIN MOHD BAHARUDIN

A173642

14/8//2022

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Throughout the whole elective posting, I think I have managed to achieve my objectives which are to learn and understand simple daily Mandarin Chinese expressions, to be able to communicate in Mandarin with basic expressions and to be familiar with Mandarin Chinese pronunciation and characters. Learning mandarin through an online platform does come with a lot of challenges but with all the adequate content and files provided by the platform, I think I have managed to learn a lot of basic mandarin phrases and words that can be used in daily conversation. I went from knowing nothing about mandarin to at least recognizing simple sentences and phrases. However, I am still trying to be familiar with the Chinese character as each word has its own unique character.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I really enjoyed the practice questions and quizzes that were provided by the platform because I am able to test myself right after learning a new topic. It helps me to identify which words or characters that I still need to work on.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

The most challenging part about learning chinese mandarin was to get the phonetic pronunciation of each character or pinyin correctly. As this online platform serves a one way communication, it is hard to ensure that we pronounce each character correctly as there is no one to refer to.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

One of my plans for the 3rd week was to create a mini dictionary and I thought it works for me. For each week, we will be given new words for us to learn and memorise and since i have started the mini dictionary, I can easily refer back to the words that i have jotted down whenever i forgot.

5. What can be improved in this project?

I think it would be better if we can get a two way communication for this course since it will help a lot in correcting the pronunciation directly with the tutor and it will be easier for us direct our question.

Week 4 of Crocheting My Life Together! 🧶

An-Nawal IsaBelle Farissa Binti Ismail Faizal
A174007
14/8/22

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

I personally think I’ve fulfilled all the objectives that I’ve set for my project. I’ve learnt how to do basic stitches and from there I’ve added on more advanced stitches, read patterns and in the end made multiple creations for this project!

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I’ve enjoyed being given the liberty to pursue something I’ve always wanted to do- to crochet. It has been a long time since I had a hobby because it was always hard for me to initiate something due to time constraints and now with this project, I have one! Being able to begin something and slowly seeing it coming together was something I enjoyed too.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

I didn’t know that crocheting would have something similar to an "artist’s block” or “writer’s block”- there are days where I would pick up my crochet hook and can’t create anything. For example, in this week I’ve attempted to make a magic circle stitch almost 10 times and I had to keep undoing it because it wasn’t as neat as I wanted it to be. It was very frustrating because I’ve done it before when I did the flower coaster, so why couldn’t I do it as easily now? I had to put that project aside and continued with other projects that needed easier basic stitches to at least give me a sense of accomplishment.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

I think that I allocated a substantial amount of time for this project willingly and happily. I know that the project’s guidelines already has the set amount of time as requirements, but I’m glad that I get to do this without feeling forced because I have chosen something that I’m genuinely interested about. Therefore, everything that I’ve planned to do in the 4 phases worked well on my part.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Something that I could do to improve this project is to plan ahead and plan better. Although I’ve already planned to do certain things such as coasters, bags etc, I didn’t plan about the materials I needed properly. There are times during these 4 weeks where I had to postpone my creations because I ran out of yarn or I didn’t have the colours I wanted. This definitely set back my project and reduced the number of things I could have created for this project.

Name: Yiew Yee Hann
Matric No.: A173428
Date: 14/8/2022

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

In my perspective, I'm quite happy and satisfied with my progression. I personally think that I've already fulfilled the objectives that I want to complete throughout this elective posting. In terms of grammar and vocabulary, I've learnt how to speak with correct grammar and I can express my feelings or thoughts fluently.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

What I enjoyed the most about this project is when I successfully complete the lessons of the week and I scored 100% for the quizzes, I can see myself really learning and improving. The exercises and quizzes also enhance my knowledge and what else that I still need to work hard on.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

One of the things that I've found challenging is the pronunciation. Because I self-learn a little bit about Korean before so I thought it will be easier for my to read, however I found it hard to pronounce some words and I would pronounce them wrong sometimes. It's also quite challenging when it comes to writing because sometimes the pronunciation might be the same but the way of writing it down is different.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought work well)

So, since the first week, I've been doing my own notes even though there's provided one. It helps a lot that I can now write most of it correctly without referring or copying. It's also good that I can easily refer back my notes and just refresh my memories since the notes are all based on my own understanding.

5. What can be improved in this project?

I think it would be better if I can plan my time well. It's still quite rushing at the end of this project because I need to squeeze a 6-week course in 4 weeks time.

Ng Khai Voon (A173439)
16/8/2022

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
Yes, I have fulfilled all 3 objectives. The first objective was to finish 10 levels of language learning and gratefully I am able to achieve it. I forced myself to finish 10 levels in week 4 and should not procrastinate anymore.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
What I liked the most about the project is the knowledge that I have gained so far. I can understand Korean day by day. This is something that I have been hoping for since I am into Kpop music.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
The challenging part was to revise and use Korean frequently. It is very important to keep listening and speaking a language when we are learning. I have to keep searching and translating a Korean word although I have learned it before. I have to keep practising using the grammars so that I get familiar to it. Hence, this project requires a lot of effort and time in practising and not only learning it.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
I thinks the best thing about this whole project is that I found a great platform to learn Korean language. It is important that we have a competent teacher when we are learning something. They teaches Korean in English, making it easier for me to understand. Besides, the structuring of the lessons makes everything smooth and helps me in completing this project well.

5. What can be improved in this project?
I think this project is relatively good for me. Nothing much to be improved. Learning a new language requires consistent effort and practising. I hope I will still continue learning Korean in the future.

Name: Amriit Kaur a/p Sarjit Singh
Matric No.: A173451
Date: 16/8/2022

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Yes, I would say that my the objectives of this course was fulfilled. I managed to cover 6 weeks of Chinese in 4 weeks and I am proud to be able to do so.

My personal objective for this course was to come out being able to converse in simple Chinese and I can do that now.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I liked having the freedom to plan out my study schedule for the week and taking my time to complete the material. Somedays, I would do 10 minutes of Chinese and somedays I would do an hour. Having the freedom to do so gave me alot of flexibility to search the dictionary for the meaning of some Chinese words, especially when I did not capture the meaning immediately from the video lecture. I also enjoyed the challenge with the quizzes that really made me think. At times it was also funny how I had to translate the words to English so that I can rearrange the sentences in Chinese.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
For weeks 1-3,I would say that it was smooth sailing and my biggest challenge was the pronunciation of the words but for weeks 4 to 6, I would say that the course had gotten a little tougher especially with the assignments. Sometimes I would get caught and not be able to understand and would have to replay the audio multiple times. However I still managed to pass all of them on my first try and I am really happy with that.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

The thing that really worked for me was taking notes. In the first week, I did not take down any notes and faced the difficulty of remembering the material in the following week. Once I started taking down notes, it was so much easier and honestly a game changer. I also replayed the audio multiple times so that I could understand the word better.

5. What can be improved in this project?

I would say that this course itself by it's own is already good enough because it was so packed with information.

One thing that can be improved is that if we had a 2-way communication with the lecturer at the end of the week for her to give her feedback on my assignments and pronunciation of words because sometimes with our Malaysian accent the words may not sound right even if we think that they do. Not only that, the meeting would be good also for me to ask questions.

What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
I enjoyed learning a little bit of Korean culture throughout the learning course. I noticed that when Korean introduce themselves they will tell about their name, age, how many family members they have and their occupation. It was different from us, Malaysian. We do not necessarily tell other people how many family members we have. In Korea they will use honorifics to speak to someone older or to stranger, so it is important for them to know the age of the person they talk to.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
I found reading the clock and the date is challenging as the number used is different. There are two numbers used in Korean which are native Korean numbers and Chinese character numbers. To read the clock, we have to read the hours in native Korean numbers and using Chinese character numbers when reading the minutes.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
At the end of the posting, I have worked on the pronunciation. I have learnt that the pronunciation may not be the same way as it was spelled and I am able to introduce myself in Korean now.

5. What can be improved in this project?
I think the use of padlet is a brilliant move because we can review others activities. The duration of the elective postings can vary according to the activity.

I've enjoyed everything that i learnt so far. For me the most entertaining part of learning korea for me is reading and writing hangul. I've never thought that one day I'll write and read hangul. It always amaze me when i saw my friend could write and read hangul, but now finally I can too. Learning korea and at the same time watching korean drama somehow help me practice my knowledge. It was an amazing 4 week!

3) The most challenging part for this project is how to speak korean. It was quite hard to pronounce certain words in korea. This is because, i need to train my tongue to be softer. And to speak korean, i need to familiarise with the intonation too. This is important to differentiate either I'm asking a question or I'm telling a statement.

4) is the project worked? My answer is absolutely yes! I finally can understand korea. Well I might not understand 100% korean, or able to speak korean fluently, but this project so far help me improve myself better. It help me to improve my knowledge. Finally i can apply it when i watch kdrama or running man.

5) what can be improved? If anything that I want to improve in this project is for me to have a better plan, this is to help me and give ample of time to revise my studies.

Teoh Hui Jing, A173923, 14/8/2022

Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
Yes I have successfully mastered basic open guitar chords and positioning.

What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
I enjoy the smoothness of chords shifting and favor the harmonized guitar chords. The combination of each string notes create a harmonious tone and this is very therapeutic for me! I were thrilled with the coping ability of my fingers after many rounds of chords practicing, the muscle memory built is just so astounding.

What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
The most challenging part is to stick with the routine practicing and to prevent the short term memory from wearing off. To make it as a daily routine, it takes a lot of perseverance and discipline. Nevertheless, I managed to set a schedule to keep up with the targeted progression. I have to set time for guitar despite a going outing with my friends or some random family trip. It is indeed challenging but it is also very rewarding as I gained all the skills a long the way. I am happy to be challenged.

What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
My guitar skills. Identifying chords, shifting chords and playing according to the arranged songs. Besides, my time management and decision making in achieving consistency in practicing. I am satisfied with my achievement. Besides, I also obtained a great chance to identify the learning gap, and also the space of improvement in my skills.

What can be improved in this project?
My time allocated in guitar practicing can be more, since we have ample of time in our elective posting. I should improve my time management skills. Besides, I should improve more in my guitar skills so that I would able to play some minor chords too. I can also advance and accelerate to play some melodic lines, not just only basic chords. Moreover, I can improve my sense of music and pitch sensitivity by identify more chords in each and every songs learnt. I think there is more space of improvement in terms of identifying chords and deciding a suitable key without referring to the online sources. In short, there is a lot to improve, and even after this elective posting, I hope I can be consistent in sharpening all the skills that I had gained throughout the elective posting.

Hi…..My name is Sanjay (A174051)
Date: 19/8/2022
Day: Friday

1. Yes,objectives are fulfilled

2. I loved how I didn’t have to face any type of stress of discomfort while I was doing my course and it felt amazing doing something in your pace (it felt like I am inevitable 😂😂).The quizzes were very easy and I felt so happy being able to understand everything properly on how to apply EACH (it’s a secret method which I will tell you all about later🤭🤭🤭) in all my communications. There we’re even live classes where we discussed our thoughts and accepted other’s ideas

3. The things I found hard doing this course is that,I found it a bit hard understanding of what are they actually trying to say.You see effective communication lessons have already been thought in PPA but it was easy to picture what we need to do but in this course it all came together when I finished everything.I also found it a bit hard to answer some of the quizzes, even though they seemed easy but when I submit my answer and read the answers suggested,it showed me how wrong I was trying to tackle the questions. But besides that I honestly did not have any hard times during the whole course.

4. I believe the part which worked the best for me is the part where my thoughts were given consideration in a group discussion.Honestly saying the whole course was a success in my life because I really have changed a habit (won’t call it bad but just not good enough),to something so much better which is being able to talk to someone without arguing or causing them to feel bad or hurting my own self (emotionally).

5. I can certainly improve on my time management skills because it is still bad and I am actually trying so hard to keep myself disciplined but sometimes my lazy brain just gets the best of me.Regarding this course,it would have been great if I could have experienced it like a camp with face to face interaction with fun activities and games which I think would have made things sooooooo much fun.✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

That’s all from me and signing off from my elective posting would be me,Sanjay Ramesh (peace out✌🏼❤️✌🏼❤️✌🏼).
Byeeeeeeeeee

Sajeeth Revindran
A173427
17/8/2022

1.Were the objective of the project fulfilled ?

Yes I successfully achieved the objective w of my project which was learning Chinese Mandarin in 4 weeks.I was able to make simple conversation in Chinese.

2.What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project ?

I liked learning Chinese Mandarin in my leisure without any academic pressure. I was able to learn in my own pace.I enjoyed making random conversation with Chinese speaking strangers to practice my speaking skills.

3. What have you found challenging about this project ?

I found the pronunciation of Chinese words were quite challenging because of the way of pronunciation was same. Different pronunciation has different meaning despite similar spelling. Wrong pronunciation can lead to different meaning.I had to watch many youtube videos to learn how to pronounce correctly.

4. What had really worked ?

At first i tried watching videos without taking down the notes, however i tend to forget the words, spelling and way to pronounce after a few days.I had to re watch the video multiple times to remember. Then i decided to take down notes while watching the video which helped me remember better and it was easier for me to look back and re learn the topics that i learned weeks ago.

5.What can be improved in this project ?

I could have improved my learning Chinese language by watching Chinese movie with a subtitle. This would have helped me learn Chinese language more effectively. Apart from that, theres nothing much to improve. I hope i can consistently learn Chinese as time goes.
