Savannah, Georgia. Ongoing over 36 days.

It was the final phase of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman’s March to the Sea, where his Union forces used a scorched earth strategy to destroy Confederate resources. After December 10 Sherman’s troops cut off supplies and trapped Confederate General William Hardee’s forces, who in the end evacuated on December 20, in order to avoid destruction. Sherman then secured a Southern port and proudly presented the city to President Abraham Lincoln as a "Christmas gift."
