Levittown homes were all one-story buildings, with nearly all the same appliances and features. For the most part, the same could be said about Santa Clarita, as many of its houses all look the same. Levittown houses promoted conformity and lack of individuality, and this aspect of Levittown is somewhat applicable to Santa Clarita, as many of the houses in the city are virtually the same construct, and design. That being said, although both towns express similarity through the uniformity of buildings, Santa Clarita constructs 2-story homes, while Levittown homes were one story. Levittown homes, were also very affordable, and the youngest homeowner age was put at 23. This is definitely not the case in Santa Clarita. Despite some relatively affordable home prices, much of Santa Clarita is inhabited primarily by people from 25 to 44. In Levittown, the roads were perfectly maintained, and more often than not the neighborhood was designed in a way that kept the noisy traffic at bay. Santa Clarita is quite opposite in that aspect, as one could find many houses right next to a major street or freeway, therefore the noise level wouldn’t be as low. Although, houses in Santa Clarita tend to be near busy traffic, it does share the flawlessly manicured roads and lawn aspect of Levittown. It even states in the Levittown article, “Levittown lawns must be mowed once a week nowadays…”, clearly showing that Levittown was meticulous in that characteristic of the town. Levittown refused to sell houses to black folks looking to own a home in a safe, healthy environment. The Levitts, founders of the suburban developments, clearly expressed their views on the situation when they barred “non-Caucasians” from buying Levittown homes in the clause for standard lease. In Santa Clarita there a few isolated incidents of racism, but no major discrimination based on race, in regards to purchasing a home. The NAACP, for example, was one of the more known groups that fought the social injustices of Levittown. The city of Santa Clarita has recently faced political issues that has inspired the city as whole to come together an protest. While Levittown promoted racial segregation, Santa Clarita has fought against hurtful racial views. Housing aspect of Levittown included: lack of garages, wallboard and plywood, wide overhangs on the roofs, the elimination of a basement, and stainless steel sinks. Some of these features are still present in Santa Clarita, such as the lack of basements and stainless steel sinks. Living in California rids the need for basements, and stainless steel sinks have become a common characteristic of most houses all over the country. That being said, Santa Clarita is more developed in its electricity, technology, and building features. For instance, little to no houses in Santa Clarita still have plywood or wallboards. Levittown could be seen as not as advanced as Santa Clarita, but with the similarities in certain features, Santa Clarita could be seen as a modern day Levittown.
