Although not proven, there were theories suggesting it provides the origins of speeches and language. These theories postulated that it arose from the imitation of sound, emotions, and even sounds produced by actions.

The first fossil evidence of vocalization was a 3.3 million-year-old skeleton of a juvenile Australopithecus afarensis. The skeleton's hyoid (a bone that plays an important role in speech) had nearly the same structure as our close relative, a chimp, indicating that they may not have spoken like we do now.

However, one of the oldest discovery of evidences of speech in history was in Homo heidelbergensis fossils, which were around 450,000 years old. Their hyoid is more similar to our hyoid than chimps, but this does not prove that they are able to speak like us.
