You can teach these when your child or young person is calm, then deliberately dysregulate them with a fun or energetic activity, then practice the strategy to calm down. You can then use these strategies to respond to a level 3 (calming) escalation by modelling the technique within proximity of the child or young person.

This video introduces the idea of attachment and how trauma can impact the way children connect to caregivers and others in their lives.

Attachment is much more than meeting physical needs (e.g., food, shelter, clothing, etc.) but also includes the way we meet the child's emotional needs.

In fact, helping any child, not just those from hard places, to recognise, feel and cope with difficult emotions is one of the most important things we can do to help them to thrive in life.

Often the way we were parented lays the foundation for how we connect with others, and in our work as carers we should be striving to develop a "secure" attachment style.

If you have a child or young person who reaches level 4 escalation regularly, negotiate with them what would be helpful during those times to keep them safe, and practice those strategies when they are calm and regulated.

In TBRI, this is considered a last resort – i.e., not one that you would teach and practice, but use when you can’t give a choice or compromise.

The idea is that you deliver the no, then quickly follow that up by praising them for how well they accepted no. For example, “We can’t do that today – and I really appreciate the way you accepted no. I’m so proud of you!”

If there are regular things they struggle with, try to create as many “yes” opportunities as possible. E.g., if they’re taking certain foods without asking, surprise them by bringing out the food at different times during the day. Over time, they won’t need that food as often because they’re starting to trust that their needs will be met.
