I was a second grader in my catechism class and I remember feeling embarrassed when it was my turn to read a prayer out loud because I did not know howto read in Spanish. This was my first attempt at it, and although Spanish was my first language, and despite my parent only speaking Spanish to me, this was my first encounter with a book in Spanish. I read to students as a whole class but I also made sure to take some time to read to them individually or in smaller groups because I knew that many of them would go home to parents who had worked long hours and might not have the energy to read them a bedtime story. My parents also worked long hours and did not read to me.
