The Cuban Missile Crisis
Thesis and Reasoning:
The Cuban Missile Crisis is similar to The Lord of the Flies because Jack and Ralph fight for power just like Fidel Castro and John F. Kennedy. The battle for power in both cases, caused bad things and led to major conflict. JFK and Ralph both tried to keep things civil and at peace during the "war" to power. They both didn't want to cause too much trouble. Jack and Castro are similar in that they aren't worried about hurting anyone, they just want the power and authority, and will do anything to achieve that.
References:
1. "You're no good on a job like this... we don't want you, said Jack flatly. Threes enough" (1.274-276). This quote shows Jack trying to cut people out of authority so that it will be easier to take over completely, which is what he wanted.
2. Piggy was trying to stand up to jack because he was trying to take Jack down because he was trying to become leader of everyone. Piggy is also similar to JFK, like Ralph is, because he wanted to stop all the madness and didn't want to start any new trouble, but know that he would eventually have to fight back and he did.
3. Violence used to get what they want in both Lord of the Flies and The Cuban Missile Crisis. Nuclear missiles were sent to destroy the US but JFK was doing things to prevent war and fighting. Jack used weapons like spear and knife to scare the rest of the boys. Jack thought this was a way of gaining power over the island.

Vietnam War
The Lord of the Flies and the Vietnam War can be compared through the division of one side into two, the struggle of freedom, and the mental effects of killing.
The Vietnam War was started when Vietnam split into two parts- the North and South, just like Jack and Ralph did in Lord of the Flies. In both situations, the two sides were divided by a side who wanted power and communism, and a side that wanted democracy and survival for all.
A common theme in TLOTF is the struggle of how far is too far. Jack begins to act in a savage nature. Jack is worried the boys are going to all kill each other and themselves. In the Vietnam War, Americans began rebelling against the government because they believe the drafting and killing was unnecessary.

Rwandan Genocide
After reading the novel Lord of the Flies, I have found that some of the events in this story were written in relation to conflicts that occurred during World War two. However, the author wrote this book in order to present multiple messages to society, and connect them to modern day/recent situations, like the Rwandan Genocide. The Rwandan Genocide can connect to Lord of the Flies because they equally incorporate the deliberate killing of men, failed attempt at peace, and desire for dominance and power.

The most prominent event that occurred during the novel and the Genocide, was death. In the book, the most rational character, Piggy, and the most innocent, Simon, were brutally killed by the other boys stranded on the island. Contrastingly, over 800,000 people were killed in Rwanda, but violence, and reckless execution were also present throughout Lord of the Flies. Ralph professes the unspoken truth to Piggy when he says “Simon. That was murder.”

The Rwandan Genocide began due to disputes between two separate ethnic groups (the Hutus and the Tutsis,) after the peacekeeper (President Habyarimana) was assassinated in 1994. Although the novel was published forty years before his death, both the book and the African conflict illustrate failed attempts at peace between two peoples. For example, in the novel, Piggy grabs the boys’ attention when asking “Which is better –to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?” President Habyarimana like Ralph, strived to end the hatred between the Hutus and the Tutsis, but was unable to, even after being the head of state for thirty-three years.

In Lord of the Flies, Jack has the dire need for dominance and power over the other boys, whereas in Rwanda during the 1990’s, the Tutsis felt they should have had the greatest role in politics. Jack’s desire for authority is presented in chapter 1 when he states “I ought to be chief because I’m chapter chorister and head boy.”

Based on the reasoning stated above, the Rwandan conflict and various events in the novel Lord of the Flies are related, because they demonstrate brutal killing, unsuccessful attempts at diplomacy, and man’s will for superiority.
Citations:

Habyarimana, Juvenal. “Juvenal Habyarimana.” Juvenal Habyarimana, 2019, www.google.com/search?q=president+juvenal+habyarimana&safe=active&rlz=1C1GCEV_enUS844US844&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjo2-a4lsvhAhWkiOAKHS4QAaQQ_AUIDygC&biw=1280&bih=913#imgrc=8NaFTpTBo-RDvM:

Quotes from Lord of the Flies--https://www.shmoop.com/lord-of-the-flies/rules-order-quotes-7.html

Desert Storm
Lord of the Flies is similar to the Desert Storm conflict for these reasons:
1. Jack from Lord of the Flies is similar to Saddam Hussein in the Desert Storm. They are both the main antagonists and neither have good intentions in their actions.
2. Ralph from Lord of the Flies is similar to President Bush in the Desert Storm conflict. They both have similar roles throughout the conflict. Both are protagonists, and push back against the antagonists.
3. In Desert Storm the conflict between Iraq and the United States can be related to the conflict between Jack's tribe and Ralph's tribe. Iraq was trying to take over Kuwait for their oil, and i think this is the equivalent t Jack and his tribe trying to take complete power over the island. Ralph's tribe is the equal of the United States, where as they are both trying to keep order throughout both conflicts.
Quotes:
1. "And the conch doesn't count on my side of the island." Page 150
At this point Jack is disregarding all of the past rules the boys set, similar to Saddam Hussein going against the way that the countries have lived together in the past.
2."We need an assembly. Not for fun." "Not for these things. But to put things straight." Page 79
Ralph says this to the boys while trying to keep order on the island. In this way he is similar to President Bush trying to keep people and their countries in their designated roles.
3. "They had smoked him out and set the island on fire." Page 197
Jack and his tribe set the island on fire trying to hunt Ralph. I think this is similar to Iraq going to extreme lengths to get the oil from Kuwait. At this point Ralph is just trying to survive, and after America sees how the oil was blown up, they realize there's not much they can do to stop them anymore."

Rise of Isis
----------------------------------
Thesis:
Lord of the flies is similar to the rise of Isis conflict because of three main reasons.
----------------------------------
Reasons:
1. The islands used to be a paradise until it was inhabited by people. Before the people came, the destinations were peaceful and in order. But due to conflict and bad human nature, the lands were both destroyed fairly quickly.
2. Both islands were inhabited due to a war going on. In Lord of the Flies, the boys became stranded on the island because they were shot down by a fighter pilot during World War 2. And of course, Isis participated in a war.
3.The war of Isis was similar to Jack and Ralph's tribe fighting. Isis was basically fighting against everyone. Kind of like Jacks group. Jack was trying his best to convince other people on the island to join his tribe. And once they did, civilization did not cross their mind anymore and the obsession of killing was their main focus.
------------------------------------
Quotes:
1. "Ralph wept for the end of innocence". (chapter 12) Relating to the war getting the best of them (the boys). And the end of the good things they started with in the beginning of the book.
2."And this is what the Cabin Done." (chapter 1) The scar on the island which was left by the plane, symbolizes the destruction the boys had only by arriving on the island. The destruction of nature. But it became much, much worse after things escalated.
3. "But there were other lights in the sky, that moved fast, winked, or went out, though not even a faint popping came down from the battle fought at ten miles' height." (page 95) The quote reminds you that this whole thing is taking place during World War 2. And the war is the reason why the boys are stranded on the island.

North Korea Conflict
The North Korean conflict can be compared to the novel lord of the flies in different ways. Three main ways the conflict is similar to the novel is because of the correlation between jack and Ralph compared to the U.S. and North Korea, Jack and his obsession with killing, and Piggy's similarities to the U.S..

1.. One way that the North Korea conflict is similar to the novel Lord of the Flies is because the relationship between Ralph and Jack is similar to the one between the U.S. and North Korea. Both have ideas of what would be best for themselves and others. In the novel Ralph wanted to be civilized and have an order by having everyone share a goal and work together, similar to what the U.S. wanted. The U.S. wanted to make treaties and have the countries at peace with another. Meanwhile Jack, from the novel, had more of an anger and violent manner and wasn't concerned with doing what was necessarily right rather than what he wanted to do. North Korea's mindset was the same when threatening other countries just to accomplish their own agenda. As you can see, many similarities between the character's relationships and the countries'.(Reference: slide 2, North Korean research Power point project)
2. The second comparable similarity was between Jack's obsession in the novel and North Korea's obsession in present times. In Lord of the Flies, Jack has an obsession with killing a pig. It was all he could think about and focus on while forgetting about the effects his actions have on others. North Korea was alike in their thinking when making threats of nuclear weaponry and the obsession with obtaining some. "'There was lashings of blood' said Jack... 'you let the fire go out.'" (pg. 70 Lord of the Flies) Jack's choices and obsessions had a negative affect on everyone else and their future. North Korea has let their obsession have the same affect on millions across the world in different countries.
3. Lastly, an alike feature between Lord of the Flies and the conflict is Piggy and his similarity to the U.S. Piggy symbolized common sense and wisdom throughout the novel. He tries to keep the sense on the island when it was lost and when choices were made that shouldn't have been. The U.S. tried to do the same thing when dealing with North Korea. They tried to make treaties and calm down the troublesome country before any rash decisions were made. " 'It's them that haven't no common sense that make the trouble...'" (pg. 132, Lord of the Flies) North Korea was making trouble and the U.S. was trying to maintain the common sense that North Korea had lost. This is like what Piggy was trying to do at this point in the novel with the boys that had lost their sense. Piggy and the U.S.' role are very similar.

Cuban Missile Crisis

The Lord of the Flies is similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis for three reasons. The three reasons are that, Jack becomes a Fidel Castro, Ralph is like JFK and Eisenhower, and Jack takes the island for his control like Castro took over Cuba.

1.(Power Point)
Jack and Ralph clashed against one another for control sense they first crash-landed. Jack would gain a hatred for Ralph because he was voted the chief. In him loosing he is like Castro because Castro lost a seat in the Cuban Congress when he ran. Castro was imprisoned and Jack banished himself from the others allowing the others to follow them if they chose to do so.

2.(Chapter 10)
in chapter 10 of the Lord of the Flies Jack takes control of Castle Rock. At this point in the novel Jack controls most of the island causing Ralph to be hunted down. Castro once he is released from prison takes control of Cuba signing a deal with the Soviet Union to place missiles in Cuba to threaten the United States.

3.(Power Point)
Ralph is like JFK because both of them tried to keep the peace and saw that as the most practical option. Ralph never wanted the separation but once it happened he didnt go to war with Jack.

The Rise of ISIS
Thesis: Lord of the Flies is like the rise of ISIS mainly for these tree reasons:

Both conflicts left massive destruction in the areas in which they took place.

Roger is like ISIS and Jack is like Al Qaeda.

The ending effect of how Ralph views Jack and his tribe is similar to America views ISIS and the Middle East in general.

Quotes/References:

"Beneath the dark canopy of leaves and smoke the fire laid hold on the forest and began to grow. Acres of black and yellow smoke rolled steadily toward the sea. At the sight of the flames and the irresistible course of the fire, the boys broke to shrill excited cheering."(ch 2) This quote describes the fire when the boys first created it. The fire goes on to destroy parts of the island. Like the fire, ISIS destroyed many cities and killed many people along with its destruction.

In the beginning rise of the rise of ISIS, ISIS operated in the shadows of Al Qaeda, this is similar to Roger and Jack because Roger does all of his evil behind the leadership of Jack, as ISIS did behind Al Qaeda. Both of the boys resemble the evil in humans, and one of the many evil things that Roger does in the novel is kill Piggy. (ch 11)

One of the effects that the rise of ISIS had on America was how America viewed ISIS and the Middle East in general. This relates to Ralph's views of Jack and his tribe changing over the course of the novel. Even when Ralph and his tribe go to see Jack and his, they describe them as demonic.

Cuban Missile Crisis
The Lord of the Flies is similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis because

Jack is like Castro. He thinks Ralph like, Castro thought of the US, was trying to undermine and restrict his power.

Ralph is like JFK. He attempts to keep the peace with Jack, but like the US President, eventually had to fight back against him.

The competition between the two tribes on the island is like Free Democracy versus Communism. It parallels with common sense versus chaos.

References & Explanations

From research done on the PowerPoint: During the Cold War, Castro helped plant nuclear missiles against the US. JFK tried to prevent this by barricading the waters around Cuba without actually fighting. This compares to how Jack use his knife and spear to obtain fear and power over the boys on the island. It also points to Ralph trying his best to keep peace between all the boys and get rescued.

In Chapter 1, we see how the boys on the island voted for a leader. Jack thought he should have won because he is "chapter chorister and head boy."(pg 22) He takes personal offense to Ralph being chosen over him. This parallels to Castro believing that all of the US was against him and the way he wanted to run his country.

In chapter 8, the tribes of boys finally split apart. Jack's tribe is all about hunting, who cares about survival. Ralph's tribe is all about getting saved and making it off the island in one piece. This is very similar to the base of why Democracy and Communism were against each other. Each set of countries had their own values and they conflicted greatly.

Citations:
Golding, William. Lord of the Flies. Penguin Group, 1954.

Vietnam War
The Vietnam War can be compared to the novel LOTF because of these 3 reasons:
Both the book and the war use the same strategy of killing. this strategy is called Guerrilla Warfare. This strategy usually consists of a small group who do out undetected and battle larger numbers. both the kids and the soldiers did this. they would use the jungle as a shield and a camouflage and would surprise their enemies. in Chapter 10 page 240, it says, " Ralph hit out; then he and what seemed like a dozen others were rolling over and over, hitting, biting, scratching. He was torn and jolted, found fingers in his mouth and bit them. A fist withdrew and came back like a piston, so that the whole shelter exploded into light. Ralph twisted sideways on top of a writhing body and felt hot breath on his cheek." Ralph was disoriented and beaten by surprised by jack's crew.
The second thing is that the island is split in two. In the Vietnam war, the land split in two. the communists the north and the parliamentary gov in the south. In Chapter 9 page 216 is says, " 'You haven’t got it with you,' said Jack, sneering. 'You left it behind. See, clever? And the conch doesn’t count at this end of the island—'"
the third thing is that america tried to stop the movement of communism by sending troops to Vietnam. jack made a government on the island that was realted to communism. ralph had a government like southern vietnam. in the beginning, after they kicked out the french, vietnam was a full country, but two sides rose with different ideas and the country split. the south wanted a government of order and equality. the north wanted a governent with olny one leader. ralph wanted a government of order and equality. jack wanted a government of fun and him at its center. in the end of the war, the north won. in lord of the flies, jack takes over the whole island and its only ralph alive, running for his life. both conflicts had the same beginning and same ending. Ch 1 page 29 says," Every hand outside the choir except Piggy’s was raised immediately. Then Piggy, too, raised his hand grudgingly into the air. Ralph counted. “I’m chief then.” The circle of boys broke into applause. Even the choir applauded " Ch 12 says, "Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy."

Arab Spring

Thesis : The Lord of the Flies is similar to the Arab Spring for reasons including tyrannic people in power suppress people who oppose, the heavy use and integration of violence, and leaders abusing their power to exploit the people.

Connections (might change order):

Tyrannic people in power suppress people who oppose - when leaders exploit the people there will quickly be opposition as they decide they don't like that very much. Then the leaders, not wanting to give up the power they gained, will suppress the opposition. Throwing away empathy for the people in favor of their own interests. In the Arab Spring we see this with the brutal take-down of activists in Egypt, Tunisia, and other Arab Spring countries. Then in Lord of the Flies when Jack comes into power on the island he takes down all of what is left of Ralph's group, and then Ralph himself. He could not stand people questioning his society.

Leaders using heavy Violence ( apart of how they do such ) - I would say the violence is the most prominent factor in Lord of the Flies and the Arab Spring. The violence transpires the most as the tyrannical power against people who oppose. Like with the Arab Spring there was a significant incident in June 2010 where Egyptian police beat activists. In Lord of the Flies there is a wide collection of violent interactions, but the most prominent ones as they relate to violence with Jack against Ralph (and his group) are the kidnapping of Samneric, the killing of Piggy, and the “hunting” of Ralph. Piggy was just trying to give a speech to Jack and his hunters that was based on facts and logic, but in response they crushed him and left his body to wash out to sea. In addition to specific examples, Jacks entire society is based on violence and killing, as clearly shown by their chant.

Leaders abusing power - When certain people come into power they get delusional and start to throw away reason and humanity and rule in a way that will solely benefit them. You can see this in the Arab Spring with both Tunisia and Egyptian dictators turning their countries into police states to gain more control. In the Lord of the Flies this is shown when Jack manipulates the younger boys to join this hunters by offering meat, for the end of getting power away from Ralph. And then we see it again with Jack throwing all logic to the wind and trying to get Ralph out by just burning down the island (and their resources).

Quotes:

“'I'm chief,' Ralph said tremulously. 'And what about the fire and I've got the conch--' 'You haven't got it with you,' Jack said sneering. 'You left it behind. See, clever? And the conch doesn't count on this side of the island--'" Here Jack is trying to take away Ralph"s mode of voicing his opinion, to unfairly shut down any reason Ralph presents in favor of Jack's own flawed out look.

“Kill the beast. Cut his throat. Spill his blood." Here you can see that the entire modo of Jack's society is based around death and violence. You can see this violence within the tribe, with their 'dance', and out side, with Ralph and Piggy.

“'Listen, all of you. me and my hunters, we're living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join my tribe coma and see us.'" This is Jack manipulating the little ones to leave Ralph's tribe because they don't know any better and just want meat. While Jack just wants power.

Conclusion: Abuse of power and exploitation of the people will lead to death and violence within a society.

Citations:

Benson, Sonia G.

desert storm

The Lord of the Flies relates Desert Storm to in three aspects: Saddam Hussein has the qualities of Jack, the invasion of Kuwait resembles Jack's raid, and the Kuwait oil fires were similar to the burning of the island.

In Lord of the Flies, Jack begins to rule like a dictator after he went off to form his own group. Saddam Hussein was an Iraqi dictator for more than twenty years. Both use fear and violence to get what they want. Jack and Saddam Hussein were power hungry. From the beginning of Lord of the Flies, Jack wanted to become chief of the boys, and Saddam Hussein believed that he was destined by God to rule Iraq forever.

After the Iran-Iraq War, Iraq was in a high amount of foreign debt, $100 billion. Saddam Hussein argued that Kuwait was taking Iraq's oil. Thus, he invaded the country and took over the capital. One of the main reason for the invasion was because of the debt, and Kuwait was rich in oil. After Jack and the Hunters kill the pig in Lord of the Flies, they attacked Ralph and his group at night to steal Piggy's glasses for fire. Both of them used violence against others to get their wants.

Near the end of the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein realized his defeat and decided to blow up the oil in Kuwait to destroy the country. He wanted to ruin Kuwait's economy and make the land inhabitable. Similarly, Jack set the entire island on fire to smoke Ralph out or kill him in it. In both cases, it resulted in the destruction of resources. The Kuwait fires destroyed the oil supply, and the island fire destroyed the fruit trees and the wildlife/pigs.

1. "Jack spoke. 'Give me a drink.' Henry brought him a shell and he drank, watching Piggy and Ralph over the jagged rim. Power lay in the brown swell of his forearms: authority sat on his shoulder and chattered in his ear like an ape." (150)
Jack uses his power to make others do things for him. It is used to only benefit him, not the community/boys.

2. “You could have had fire whenever you wanted. But you didn’t. You came sneaking up like a thief and stole Piggy’s glasses!” (176)
Although Jack could have negotiated with Ralph to use the fire, he decided to brutally attack Ralph and the others for the glasses.

3. "Now the fire was nearer; those volleying shots were great limbs, trunks even, bursting. The fools! The fools! The fire must be almost at the fruit trees—what would they eat tomorrow? " (220)
Jack was so caught up in trying to kill Ralph that he did not think about the potential outcome of setting the entire island on fire.

ISIS
The conflict with ISIS in the Middle East and the conflicts in Lord of the Flies are very similar.
In both the book and in the Middle East, beautiful environments were scarred and destroyed beyond repair. In Chp. 1, the author describes the scar that the crashing plane left on the island. At the end of the book, specifically in Chp. 12, the boys set fire to the island in attempts to kill Ralph. These two events brought destruction upon the island. In the Middle East, with terrorist groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda, the bombings and attacks constantly plaguing the areas have left only rubble and destruction to what were once beautiful cities.
Another similarity is that people were negatively affected and were changed from who they were beforehand. Many of the books my group researched about this conflict were memoirs written by survivors of the ISIS occupation and showed how they were changed forever by it. The boys in the book also undergo drastic physical and mental changes. "This was a savage whose image refused to blend with that ancient picture of a boy in shorts and a shirt."
Finally, America's military intervening and fighting in against ISIS in the Middle East is very similar to the conflict between Ralph and Jack. Ralph is the United States, trying to protect civility and common sense, while Jack is like ISIS, causing chaos, death, and destruction. Ralph was a good leader and tried to implement democracy with the use of the conch shell (Chp. 1,2,3), much like how America represents freedom and democracy. On the other hand, Jack was more like a dictator who ruled by instilling fear into his followers (Chps. 8-12), much like how ISIS and other terrorist groups rule with fear. In conclusion, this is how the conflicts in Lord of the Flies connects to the conflict I researched with ISIS in the Middle East.

North Korea

The Lord of the Flies is reminiscent of the North Korea conflict, because they both involve division, ruling by fear, and manipulation.

They both involve division. Korea was split into both North and South Korea -- countless families and couples, children and their friends, were separated. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph's one, big, unified group split into two groups, one led by Jack, and the other led by Ralph, who was the beginning leader. Jack says, "I'm not going to play any longer. Not with you." on page 127, and then leaves with a half of the boys.

They both involve ruling by fear. In North Korea, Kim Jong Un makes America and other nations out to be terrifying and out to get North Koreans. In the LOTF, Jack rules with fear of the beast. He speaks as if the Beastie is a monster that can come at any time, and that Jack is the only one who can protect them. He says, "We'd better keep on the right side of him, anyhow. You can't tell what he might do." -- page 161.

They involve tensions between nations that cause a large issue. In North Korea, there is tension between a lot of different nations; people who do not agree with how Kim Jong Un treats his citizens. In the LOTF, the boys originally crash land on the island because they're flying to a safe haven to escape World War Two. "When we was coming down I looked through one of them windows. I saw the other part of the plane. There were flames coming out of it."

    Arab Spring
Lord of the Flies is similar to the Arab Spring for a few reasons. For example, Jack is like the dictators. Piggy is like the innocent protesters killed by corrupt police and their dictators. The fire set on the island is similar to the wars that the Arab Spring caused.
On Chapters 9-12 Jack starts his own tribe because tensions with Ralph was getting worse. Jack is the absolute chief and won';t bother to listen to others. He also uses fear mongering of the Beastie to control them just like dictators controlling their citizens.
On chapters 11, Ralph and Piggy decides to rise up and confront Jack. This is similar to when the citizens began to start protesting and revolting. However just like Piggy many innocent civilians and protesters are killed by the officers controlled by the dictators.
On chapters 11 through 12 Jack has started hunting down Ralph. Just like Dictators trying to put out the fires of rebellion. After the Arab Spring, Syria has gone into a deeper civil war. This is similar fire Jack sets on the island. Just like War the fire ravaged the island. War leaves nothing but pain, misery and destruction.
This is how the Arab Spring is similar to the Lord of the flies. They were both problems of different ideas and beliefs.
